SUMMARY STATEMENT
The federally funded Title III program helps eligible institutions of higher education to become self-sufficient and expand their capacity to serve low-income students by providing funds to improve and strengthen the academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability of institutions. This five-year, grant funded program is comprehensive and transformative. The Hagerstown Community College’s Title III Program: Guided Pathways Approach to Student Success (GPASS) is focused on improving two overarching areas: Student Engagement and Retention, and Instructional Design and Quality Matters.
 

This position will coordinate, document and assess a broad range of activities and programs that support student success and retention. The Retention Activity Coordinator will help develop, coordinate and facilitate activities and programs in conjunction with instructional and student services units that will help ensure the retention and success of students at Hagerstown Community College. The Retention Activity Coordinator will also help implement and evaluate policies and procedures to ensure alignment with the Title III program.

 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • In consultation with the Title III Grant Project Director and the Dean of Students, ensure retention results are reflected in assessment reports and continued project and college operations and new initiatives as well as new Title III activities become institutionalized across HCC.
  • Use data driven metrics to work with the faculty, student services staff, the Office of Planning and Institutional Research and other members of the College community to identify populations of students who are most at risk of not completing their educational goals (e.g. first-generation students, minority students, developmental education students) and creates and implements activities to improve student retention for these populations.
  • Monitor academic progress of students who are identified at-risk. Work with the students, faculty, and other academic support offices to offer resources and interventions that enhance success. Coordinate outreach with the Dean of Students for students who are on Financial Aid SAP.
  • Review retention data with the Title III Grant Project Director, Dean of Students, and Dean of Instruction to identify common trends and barriers impacting progress; work collectively to strategize pathways for success.
  • Use ConexED Advising and other platforms to organize and maintain data, compose and prepare correspondence, reports and other materials.
  • Advocate for and monitor ConexED Advising efforts by providing training for faculty and advisors and key personnel to efficiently use ConexED as retention tool.
  • Implement and customize enhanced features of the student mobile app; infuse mobile app use into student onboarding practices, FYE, and campus culture.
  • Attend staff meetings; serve on committees; submits monthly reports; develops communication and strategies for retention of students.
  • Collaborate with Student Activities and the Dean of Students to provide input and direction for a new student orientation program that meets retention needs.

Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred in Education, Liberal Arts, Social Science or related field. Minimum of 3 years’ experience with student retention practices and programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students in higher education setting.
  • Experience designing and implementing successful strategies and programs involving faculty and staff.
  • Experience with ConexED Advising and other student information platforms.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts and ideas to individuals and groups. Knowledge of student retention strategies.
  • Skill in operating various software packages, student information software, database management, dashboard updates and data analytics.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work in a fast-paced environment with regular interruptions and multiple competing demands.
  • Ability to work with at-risk and culturally diverse populations.
  • Excellent time management skills.
