The Opportunity

The UCF Division of Digital Learning at the University of Central Florida is seeking applicants for the position of faculty administrator and assistant vice provost of Distributed Learning. The assistant vice provost for Distributed Learning is responsible for the Center for Distributed Learning (CDL) which serves as the central agent for online learning at UCF, providing leadership in distance learning policies, strategies, and practices. This is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure earning position reporting to the vice provost of the Division of Digital Learning.

The assistant vice provost leads the Center for Distributed Learning (CDL), overseeing digital course design, development, and delivery. This position plays a critical role in the university’s commitment to access, quality, and affordability. The CDL is the largest unit within the Division of Digital Learning and employs approximately 70 full-time employees and 20 part-time/hourly staff. It is comprised of the following functions overseen by a core group of seasoned professionals that comprise the CDL Leadership Team:

  • Instructional Design: CDL’s instructional designers are full-time, 12-month (non-tenure earning) faculty with assignments that include course design, consultation, faculty development, scholarship, and service.

  • Learning Content Production: Including media production (both video and graphics), the Faculty Multimedia Center facility and its programming, and the design and development of non-academic learning content.

  • Learning Platform Services: Responsible for administration of our learning management system, known as Webcourses@UCF, as well as a help desk for online faculty and students.

  • Learning Technology Development: A team of application developers who build innovative software solutions and support digital course production.

  • Pegasus Innovation Lab (iLab): A program management office charged with incubating and supporting innovative digital learning projects with the potential to scale and positively impact student learning.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing key functional areas of CDL operations, including instructional design/development, learning technologies, media development, technical support, and targeted strategic initiatives.

  • Supervising a staff of approximately 70 full-time and 20 part-time employees, including in-unit faculty, exempt professionals, non-exempt professionals, and hourly workers.

  • Overseeing the CDL leadership team of directors responsible for functional areas and manager-level team leads.

  • Determining fiscal requirements and developing/managing the center budget.

  • Designing, planning, coordinating, and reporting on core operations and strategic initiatives of the CDL in pursuit of excellence in UCF’s online teaching and learning enterprise.

  • Leading and nurturing effective partnerships within the CDL and with campus administrators to achieve strategic initiatives and vision.

  • Developing relevant policies and providing leadership and direction in policy compliance.

  • Serving as a member of DDL’s core executive leadership team and advising the vice provost on digital learning as appropriate.

  • Representing the CDL in collaboration with senior leaders of other university departments.

  • Representing the CDL and UCF on external boards, at relevant events, and in the media.

  • Representing the vice provost for Digital Learning, as appropriate. May serve on or as chair of appropriate university or inter-institutional committees. Responsible for ad hoc assignments as directed.

  • Participating in and overseeing scholarly activity related to online and blended learning.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited institution by time of application and 10+ years of relevant experience, with at least 5+ years of leadership experience at an institution of higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree from an accredited institution.

  • Experience designing and delivering online and blended courses at a postsecondary level.

  • Experience leading faculty, especially in a unionized environment.

  • Experience overseeing digital course development teams.

  • A demonstrated record of scholarly activity.

  • Demonstrated commitment to innovation and excellence in digital education.

  • Strong leadership and excellent interpersonal skills to work collegially and collaboratively to meet the academic goals/mission of the university.

  • Demonstrated evidence of ability to work collaboratively with both faculty and administration to implement change.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and communicate this to a broad set of audiences.

  • A commitment to shared governance.

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills to plan and execute tasks to achieve goals.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead change.
