Department Summary
The University of North Texas (UNT) is a Carnegie R1 research university and a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution and Minority-Serving Institution, with a population of over 42,000 students. The Denton community combines close proximity to one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country (Dallas-Fort Worth) with an intimate and culturally vibrant college town atmosphere. The Department of Chemistry has 28 faculty members, 20 research-active faculty (including 2 faculty with joint appointments), approximately 100 graduate students, and approximately 250 undergraduate chemistry majors. The department is currently in a growth phase, with plans to hire up to six additional tenure-track faculty members in the next few years. Current research strengths include computational chemistry, materials chemistry, and catalysis, as well as a growing interdisciplinary emphasis on chemical biology. Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry at the University of North Texas (UNT) located in Denton, Texas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry position specializing in Chemistry Education Research, to begin September 1, 2023. The selected candidate is expected to play an important role in the current revitalization of our Ph.D. program in Chemistry Education, while also engaging in externally funded research and contributing to the teaching mission of the UNT Chemistry Department. The UNT Chemistry Department has a strong tradition of collaborative and interdisciplinary research that is strongly integrated with the education of undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral students. The Chemistry Education Ph.D. program is actively being revitalized, and our faculty view this program as a key component of our strategic plan to grow and diversify interdisciplinary research in our department. Candidates should have a record of published research in chemistry education, a strong commitment to research and teaching, compelling plans for an independent research program, and the desire to collaborate with current chemistry education research faculty and utilize existing discipline-based education research resources across campus. Research experience or interests may include but are not limited to pedagogy, inclusive teaching practices, assessment, and quantitative and/or qualitative methods.

The new faculty member will be expected to: 1) contribute to a vigorous and nationally recognized program of research and scholarship in Chemistry Education; 2) advise and provide mentorship for graduate and undergraduate student researchers; 3) obtain external funding by writing successful research proposals; 4) develop and teach graduate-level courses in Chemistry Education; 5) contribute to undergraduate teaching, as appropriate; 5) demonstrate excellence in teaching; and 6) participate in departmental/college/university service, as well as professional service activities.

UNT’s location also provides almost limitless opportunities for partnerships with other educational institutions that are interested in improving science education for the diverse and rapidly growing population of the Dallas-Fort Worth/North Texas region.
Minimum Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemistry Education Research, or a closely related field
Preferred Qualifications
Postdoctoral research experience is preferred. Experience teaching chemistry at the college and/or secondary school level will be viewed favorably.
