Job Description


The Beirne-Carter Immunology Center (CIC) at the University of Virginia’s (UVA) School of Medicine seeks a Research Associate to perform sophisticated experimental research in the areas of immune regulation of lung injury, recovery and chronic disease development following infection. The successful candidate will participate in a multiplicity of relevant lab projects and in writing study reports for the study sponsors, papers, and grant applications and is expected to develop research programs as time permits. The incumbent will also be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings and CIC-related seminars, as well as work with graduate students, technicians, fellows and collaborators in the laboratories involved in the project.

Job responsibilities include:
•    Full-time research or scholarship at the University
•    Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career
•    Supervised by a senior scholar; and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship
•    In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

Qualified candidates must have:
Education: Doctoral degree at the time of hire in Immunology, Virology, Lung Biology or a related field.
Experience: Experience in molecular biology, microscopy, cellular immunology, murine models of disease, and human samples is preferred.  Intensive experience in small animal procedures, flow cytometry, molecular biology and immune cell purification and culture, etc.
 

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Strong time management skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.  This position will remain open until filled.  This position will sponsor applicants for work visas.

The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University.
