Case Western Reserve University

Job Description

Position: Postdoctoral Fellow in mathematical/statistical imaging and computer vision

Description

· Full time 2 year term with possible extension · Opportunity to make valuable contributions to research at the interface between mathematics/statistics and biomedical engineering · Opportunity to gain teaching experience (only one course teaching load in 2 years)

About the position

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on a project entitled “Mathematical and Statistical Study of Uncertainty and Data Inhomogeneity in Biomedical Artificial Intelligence (AI)”. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Weihong Guo (Department of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics) and Dr. Shuo Li (Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Computer and Data Science) at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).

Biomedical AI technologies have achieved significant improvements over the past two decades thanks to the recent development of deep learning (DL) models. However, data heterogeneity has been the bottleneck preventing recent advances in biomedical AI from being used in real clinical settings. This project focuses on developing fundamental mathematical/statistical theory and computational algorithms to address data heterogeneity and enables reliable biomedical AI.

The key responsibilities will be to:

· undertake research at the interface between mathematics/statistics and biomedical engineering · publish research papers · demonstrate research excellence · teach one undergraduate math or statistics course

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow who has:

· a PhD (or near completion) in applied mathematics or statistics or a relevant area with teaching/mentoring experience · relevant expertise in mathematical imaging, computer vision and machine learning desired · demonstrated ability to conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision · the ability and a willingness to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to contribute to long-term research goals · a strong track record of publishing their research · excellent communication (written and verbal), organizational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail · high level interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues · a demonstrated ability to complete work in timely fashion and to write up results for publication.

Candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a statement of current and future research plans, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and the candidate should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted directly by the writers, at least one of which should address teaching. All documents should be sent to postdoc_guoli@case.edu. Applications will be reviewed upon arrival until the position is filled.
