Position Focus:

Reporting to the Deputy Director of the MacMillan Center, this position is responsible for overseeing the operations and management of Inclusion Economics at Yale University (YIE), a joint initiative of Macmillan and the Economic Growth Center (EGC), and advising related research centers, both within Yale and abroad, with the aim of developing top tier, strategically interlinked infrastructure to catalyze and advance research on topics of economics, inequality, growth and inclusion.

The role will serve as both the Managing Director, or lead staff, of Inclusion Economics at Yale and as a strategic advisor working across the MacMillan Center, Economic Growth Center, and Tobin Center. He/she will work closely with leadership to drive YIE organizational strategy and advise on strategy at these research centers at Yale, and the country hub offices of Inclusion Economics in South Asia, Inclusion Economics India Centre at IFMR and Inclusion Economics Nepal at Governance Lab. 

In those capacities, he/she will: Lead management, recruitment and oversight of research and programmatic staff for YIE and senior leadership teams in associated hub offices. Assess country level financial planning and ensure appropriate staffing, fundraising, and management plans are in place across all offices.  Oversee affiliated researcher and internship programs to ensure strategic alignment with organizational goals. Lead central financial planning for YIE, setting of fundraising targets, along with providing oversight of spending, planning, and analysis of non-sponsored and sponsored funds to promote overall fiscal responsibility and efficiency. Engage affiliates to assess research needs and ensure a responsive infrastructure that can most effectively support data-intensive field research in economics while ensuring robust systems for risk management, strategic financial management and efficient use of comparative advantages among faculty and staff. Coordinate engagement with and inputs of the Scientific Directors and Senior Leadership Team at Inclusion Economics and the Advisory Committee and other related groups at the Economic Growth Center. Work across teams to conduct regular assessments of progress against organizational goals, identifying operational and strategic challenges, and laying out mutually agreed-upon goals and implementation frameworks to achieve those goals. Support new high-potential research via strategic and operational inputs relevant to proposal development and kickstarting new activities, ensuring adequate support systems are in place to enable that work if it moves ahead. Serve as an organizational representative to key internal and external stakeholders, negotiating complex challenges and stewarding partnership development. Play a key role in fundraising including donor relationship development and management, coordination with Center leadership and the University Development office, and structuring of new donor-funded initiatives.

Responsibilities include the following: Partner with Center leadership to develop and execute strategic plans and goals. Develop and implement mission-aligned programs and activities. Support the recruitment, onboarding, retention, and space needs of faculty, staff, and students. Support annual budgeting process. Monitor revenue and major expenditures. Provide infrastructure for research activities of the Centers via budgeting, grant writing, and staffing. Represent the Initiative within Yale, in the community, at conferences, with donors and alumni, with government agencies and foundations. Serve as a bridge between affiliated members, faculty leadership, department chairs, school deans, and other high-level administrators. Supervise exempt and non-exempt staff, including working with HR and conducting annual performance reviews. Participate in fundraising efforts, donor relations, and stewardship reporting, with Center Directors and Development. Other duties as required.


Essential Duties

The position will focus on two broad areas. First, in collaboration with the Faculty Director, the position will provide strategic leadership and, second, will support research and management of the program’s operations. Strategic leadership 1. Develop, evaluate, and improve the program’s systems and activities in service of the mission to advance research on scale. 2. Develop a communications strategy to reach academic, philanthropic, and policy audiences, as well as oversee its implementation. 3. Manage relationships with existing donors and lead fundraising efforts.4. Represent the program at high-level internal and external functions. Research support and management1. Recruit and maintain a network of scholars at the forefront of research on scale. 2. Develop partnerships with governments and other large-scale implementers, promoting engagement between implementers and scholars. 3. Recruit research support staff including research assistants and postdoctoral associates. 4. Direct key activities including conferences, grantmaking, and research support staff. 5. Oversee reporting to internal and external stakeholders. 6. Produce research and / or policy outputs in collaboration with network scholars. 7. Travel internationally in support of the program’s mission.


Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in a related field plus eight years of work in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience planning, organizing, and implementing various events. 


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the Center.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to work with and advise faculty, visiting professors, staff, and students and communicate effectively between them. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to work independently, multi-task, use good judgment, work under pressure and meet deadlines. Excellent computer skills and familiarity with web development systems. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to develop new and unique ways to improve operations and to create new opportunities.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness. First-hand experience in related areas.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated positive attitude and commitment to working as a member of a center-wide team.  The ideal candidate should have the ability to understand, communicate, and effectively interact with people across cultures. Being open to learning about different dimensions of diversity and exhibiting positive attitudes towards cultural differences.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Master’s degree in public policy or related field and 10 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.  Increasing seniority in management positions at organizations focused on policy-oriented research in economics.
