Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) is a partnership of NC State University, NC A&T State University and the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The Center for Environmental Farming Systems develops and promotes just and equitable food and farming systems that conserve natural resources, strengthen communities, improve health outcomes, and provide economic opportunities in North Carolina and beyond. Our goals are to: provide new economic opportunities in rural and urban communities, develop technologies that promote a cleaner and healthier environment, educate the next generation of farmers, consumers, and scientists, and engage all citizens in the food system.
Essential Job Duties
The EmPOWERing Mountain Food Systems Locals Food Coordinator will be responsible for leading and administering multiple local foods grants and programming in Western North Carolina (WNC), through established partnerships with multiple organizations throughout the region and state.

- Aggregation support and logistics strategies for timely and quality local food delivery;
- Localized and seasonal menu development;
- Ability to organize community food preparation classes with diverse community members;
- Ability to create written support and training materials; collaborative goal setting with diverse groups seeking to develop food councils; outreach and
- Partnership with unique food systems partners in the region including farmers, processors, aggregators, distributors, public health agencies, and NC Cooperative Extension.
Primary duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Work closely in partnership with the Local Foods working group at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems.
- Lead community partners to coordinate the Local Food Procurement Assistance Program, which is the far west (WNC) food hub aggregation and delivery of weekly locally produced food.
- Coordinate and manage cooking and nutrition educational curricula for Latinx farm worker community and other food insecure communities in WNC.
- Develop training materials and resources to aid in community-led nutrition education integrating health outcomes.
- Coordinate and lead program evaluation for grant objectives with statewide partners.
- Lead and assist in grant writing for program continuation.
- Support the development of Local Food Councils in WNC in collaboration with CEFS Community Food Strategies and regional partners; this may include convening local stakeholders, data collection for economic impact assessments, supporting local meetings, and regional collaborations and network development.
Other work/responsibilities:
- Participate in CEFS Local Food Program team supplying updates and opportunities for cross-program collaboration.
- Participate in current and future regional food systems working groups in either a leadership or participant role.
This position will be located in Cherokee, NC.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in public health, nutrition, food systems, public administration, non-profit management or related fields.
- At least 3 years of nutrition education programming including local food demonstrations.
- At least 3 years of experience working in food systems, preferably in North Carolina.
Other Required Qualifications
- Experience in managing multiple grant funds and successfully fulfilling grant objectives with university and community partners.
- Experience reporting and documenting program information in an organized and timely manner.
- Demonstrated skills in leadership, community collaboration, outreach, and communication.
- Experience working with farmer, food-insecure, rural, tribal and Latinx communities, preferably in North Carolina.
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
- Experience developing strong working relationships and respect with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective evaluation tools.
- Demonstrated ability to manage programs with shifting priorities while meeting project objectives with creative solutions and effective outcomes.
- Computer literacy (proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel,Office and Canva and Social Media platforms).
- Must be able to lift and carry training supplies, publications, and equipment needed for training and presentations with/without reasonable accommodations
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years working in food systems projects in Western North Carolina, with a focus on nutrition education and local foods in a community context.
- Experience working with Cooperative Extension, non-profit organizations and local government agencies focused on local food supply chains.
- Experience with diverse cultural groups such as Latinx, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) and food insecure individuals.

- Valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 60 days of start.
