Department Purpose

 

The UC Davis Genome Center (UCDGC), in the College of Biological Sciences, coordinates interdisciplinary research in the areas of genomics and bioinformatics, and is involved in the training of undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

 

Job Summary


Under supervision, perform common and specific laboratory support functions in the Metabolomics Core facility. Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to perform sample preparation, operate and maintain a GC-TOF mass spectrometer, enter information into the laboratory’s miniX LIMS system, and retrieve and prepare results of the analysis. Perform data processing work for quality control purposes, targeted metabolite quantifications and visual inspection of GC-TOF MS raw data. Work with visiting scholars and students with respect to training (including courses taught) and performing work according to SOPs in Metabolomics Core.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Maintain a work schedule during the core business hours. Occasional overtime required during heavy workload/deadline periods. Work in a high traffic area with frequent interruptions. Position requires employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and /or infectious diseases are present.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:         

  • Experience operating mass spectrometers, flame ionization and other detectors used in gas chromatography.
  • Experience in gas chromatography, including installation of columns, and maintaining instrumentation by changing parts such as nuts, liners, syringes and ferrules.
  • Experience using laboratory automation equipment, including method development for automation.
  • Experience using basic computer skills for raw data file and results data file handling, LIMS handling, entry into database form sheets, record keeping of quality control charts and GC-MS software operation.
  • Experience reading and following protocols in the scientific literature.
  • Experience with chemicals and requirements for safe handling procedures.
  • Experience performing technical maintenance with strict attention to detail to ensure high quality GC-MS or GC-TOF MS operation.

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)     :

  • Math skills to maintain purchasing records, chemical inventories and perform calculations to prepare media and solutions.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:         

  • Experience with method development for quantitative mass spectrometry, including GC-TOF MS.
  • Experience with technical maintenance of mass spectrometers.
  • Experience running a scientific service core.
  • Experience using an automated billing system.
