Summary of Job Duties:

A motivated, talented, organized and responsible Assistant Staff Scientist is sought to lead a major component of an effort to characterize DNA double strand break repair mechanisms in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Genome integrity and DNA damage repair mechanisms are critical to our understanding of cancer and are a focus of the DNA damage host reponse program and of several research groups at UAMS. The laboratory employs a comprehensive multi-discplinary approach to explore the mechanistic basis of DNA double strand break repair processing using structural biology (x-ray crystallography and Cryo-EM), biochemistry, computational biology and molecular biology. The Assistant Staff Scientist will be involved in the Structural Biology and Biochemistry efforts in the laboratory.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Structural Biology or related field plus 0 – 5 years of relevant experience required. 

  • Experience in biochemistry, biophysics crystallography, cryoEM, or a related field.

  • Experience with biochemical and biophysical approaches to characterize protein nucleic acid complexes

  • Must have at least one first author publication in a reputed peer-reviewed journal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postdoctoral fellowship experience.

  • Five years of relevant postdoctoral research experience, optimally at the level of Research Associate, Assistant Staff Scientist or similar position.

Responsibilities:

  • Study the structure and/or function of genes and proteins in cancer.

  • Independently perform experiments in areas assigned by the supervisor.

  • Work efficiently and independently to manage projects, including design and perform experiments, maintain appropriate records and documentation, and collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data.

  • Develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols as needed for evolving lab priorities.

  • Maintain working knowledge of relevant literature.

  • Assist in drafting manuscripts for publication.

  • Assist in mentoring or training postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, medical students, or undergraduate students.

  • Attend and present at national and international meetings and workshops.  

  • Responsible for overall organizing reagents, maintenance and training in use of laboratory instrumentation, reagents, interfacing with other laboratories and staff at UAMS in assigned areas

  • Responsible for compliance with state and federal in all areas

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
