The Position

Reporting to the Vice President of Instruction, the Dean of Kinesiology, Athletics and Dance is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating instructional, student support, and professional development programs designed to ensure student success. The Dean works closely with the Vice President of Instruction, the Vice President of Student Services, faculty, and staff to deliver integrated instructional programs, including Kinesiology, Athletics, and Dance. The Dean serves as the Athletic Director for the college athletic program and is responsible for planning, developing, organizing, supervising, coordinating, and evaluating a holistic athletic program geared toward student recruitment, retention, success, and transfer in compliance with the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Constitution and Bylaws.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   1. Provide leadership, plan, coordinate, direct, evaluate, and support the activities of the Kinesiology, Athletics, and Dance programs
  2. Attend all athletic games/events/competitions hosted by the college and act as the game administrator; serve as a liaison and college representative with the CCCAA and conference organizations related to athletics; conduct student-athlete eligibility and compliance meetings for each intercollegiate team; submit and monitor all conference, state, and district required compliance and eligibility information for each student-athlete; and interface with the community in matters of community relations and affairs associated with the Skyline College athletic program
  3. Perform in-service training for all athletics faculty and staff on the CCCAA Constitution and Bylaws; NCAA and NAIA transfer requirements and SB 206, Name, Image and Likeness (NIL)
  4. Work in collaboration with the Office of Planning, Research, and Institutional Effectiveness to compile the data necessary to develop, write and submit all required documentation for Title IX compliance, such as but not limited to, the annual Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA), CCCAA Gender Equity Form R-4 and all other conference, state and federal reports
  5. Work with faculty and staff to ensure that the Kinesiology, Athletics, and Dance programs and all support services meet requirements for all college planning and evaluation activities, including but not limited to program review, accreditation, resource allocation, and student learning outcomes and assessment
  6. Supervise, schedule, evaluate, and coordinate the use of Kinesiology, Athletics, and Dance facilities; manage the student, community, and rental use of all Kinesiology, Athletics, and Dance facilities consistent with Board Policy, Administrative Procedure, and campus processes including the completion and submission of contracts; and oversee the ongoing maintenance, repair, and sustainability of all Kinesiology, Athletics and Dance facilities
  7. Provide leadership in addressing accreditation standards and college initiatives
  8. Participate collaboratively in strategic planning, enrollment management, and policy development
  9. Develop on both a short- and long-term basis given available resources and in alignment with other district programs, a division staffing plan that meets division needs and is consistent with the college mission, vision, and values
  10. Develop, manage, and augment as needed the division budget and direct the development and implementation of selected externally funded initiatives
  11. Provide oversight and direction with the development of resource allocations for facilities, equipment, supplies, services, and technologies that sustain programs in the division
  12. Per Board Policy 8.45, schedule the use of all district/campus-owned vehicles; verify that personnel using district/campus-owned vehicles have submitted all required documentation and are cleared to drive by the district office; and coordinate the service, care, and repair of district/college-owned vehicles
  13. Work with other Deans to ensure smooth and efficient integration between programs administered by other divisions and services provided by departments within the division
  14. Provide direction and support to help faculty and staff engage in meaningful assessment of student learning outcomes
  15. Work with the Vice President of Student Services and Deans to encourage and facilitate the integration of appropriate student support services and advising for the recruitment, retention, academic monitoring, completion, and matriculation of student-athletes
  16. Work with the San Mateo County Community College Foundation (SMCCCF) and the college Marketing, Communications, and Public Relations (MCPR) departments in developing, maintaining, and expanding external fundraising, marketing, sports information, website, and public relations initiatives for division programs
  17. Promote professional development opportunities for faculty and staff
  18. Represent the college to professional organizations, governance entities, community groups, and prospective donors and friends of the college
  19. Serve on college and district committees
  20. Foster instructional and institutional effectiveness by undertaking other duties as necessary or as delegated by the Vice President of Instruction
  21. Promote effective communication among colleagues in the division. Evaluate all faculty and staff in accordance with district procedures and seek to mentor, support and guide staff in developing themselves as professionals and as part of the Skyline College community
  22. Work with and support the Certified Athletic Training staff and Health Services to provide programs and services that support the health and safety of all students participating in division activities
  23. Apply and enforce the student-athlete participation agreement and make referrals to the conference commissioner and/or campus discipline officer as appropriate
  24. Serve as the division representative engaged in college, community and high school relations

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a Master’s or above or Doctoral degree from an accredited institution OR the equivalent
  • Five years of formal training, internship, or leadership experience related to the administrative assignment
  • Experience in budget development and management
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
  • Teaching experience and a minimum of one year experience as an administrator in a post-secondary instructional or related field

Physical Requirements
