Job Description
The TRIO-SSS Advisor provides individualized academic, career, and personal guidance for identified TRIO-SSS participants. This is a multi-year grant funded position by the U.S. Department of Education. This position requires day, evening, and occasional weekend hours and travel.

Essential Duties Summary
Advising
  • Provide academic, personal, financial, and career guidance to TRIO-SSS students.
  • Explain policies, procedures, and program requirements of chosen program of study.
  • Advise and counsel students in planning and selecting courses within the program of study for future semesters toward graduation.
  • Assist with registration; verify student prerequisites and requirements.
  • Act as a liaison for tutoring, academic concerns, and personal counseling needs.
  • Maintain confidential records and data on advising and counseling activities and student information.
  • Consult with students regarding academic problems or concerns and assist students in obtaining support to meet specific needs.
  • Responsible for understanding objectives and criteria for the TRIO-Student Student Support Services federal grant.

 

Enrichment Activities
  • Coordinate, promote, and facilitate workshops, seminars, and related videos for student development that include financial literacy, career development, time management, and student success, in conjunction with Marketing.
  • Assist in coordinating the annual TRIO-SSS graduation activity, summer leadership academy program, and cultural, enrichment and college transfer tours and events.
  • Assist in publicizing and promoting services, resources, and activities of the TRIO-SSS program and the College. ie- newsletter, TRIO-SSS Blackboard class, email list-serve, workshops, etc.
  • Collaborate with SGA and other organizations on campus to promote and provide student activities.
  • Assist in updating and maintaining information for students via social media, TRIO-SSS Webpage, Blackboard group, newsletter, email and text messages.
Student Affairs Expectations
  • Participate in professional conferences and individual professional development activities to stay current on national trends and processes regarding counseling and academic advising.
  • Function as a team member of the TRIO professional staff and implement processes necessary to accomplish the goals & philosophy of the Department of Education, college, division, & grant initiatives.
  • Assist with graduation and other College-related duties.
  • Actively participate in Student Affairs planning, evaluation, and program review.
  • Treat students and colleagues respectfully, speak to others courteously, and behave in such a way that creates a workplace environment that is marked by trustworthiness, honest but polite communication, and interpersonal interaction that are both personally cordial and professionally appropriate.
  • Serve on committees as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and other related duties incident to the work described herein.

Salary Range
Based on experiences. Starting salary range $37,251 to $55,746.

Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Preference in Education, Social Work, Student Affairs or related field.
  • Three or more years of experience in Student Affairs or Higher Education; working with first generation, low income, and or students with disabilities required.

 


Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work or meet in the evenings and/or on weekends, with advanced notice.
  • Ability to provide leadership in anticipating and responding to change.
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with others.
  • Ability to use productivity software, including a general knowledge of word processors and spreadsheets, the ability to send and receive email, and to complete and submit electronic forms.
  • Employees are expected to perform essential computer skills (log on/off a computer, manage and organize files, print/scan forms using a copier, maintain and recall secure passwords and change password(s) routinely per College procedures).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Provide exceptional customer services with people internal and external to the institution.
  • Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission of a comprehensive community college.
  • Flexible and adapts to change.
  • Ability to multi-task with multiple departments and activities of others.

Physical Demands
ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information, analyze data, make assessments, and exercise good judgment to make decisions; possess ease of mobility within the work environment and other areas of campus; and effective use of all forms of communication (oral, visual, auditory), including use of computers. Be able to lift weights up to 10 pounds on a regular basis
