Job Description

JOB SUMMARY The Instructional Designer will guide and collaborate on the design and production of high quality, universally designed, digitally accessible online courses. This position will provide technology integration and support, professional development and training, and instructor and student support. It will assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and practices relating to online learning. The Instructional Designer is responsible for providing best practices based on instructional design models and principles, envisioning and creating audio/video/graphic media and content to be used in online courses and training for Highland Community College.

JOB LOCATION Negotiable for the HCC locations of Atchison, Baileyville, Highland, or Holton.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Course Design
1. Outline and coordinate instructional design projects for online and hybrid courses.
2. Assist instructors, both full-time and adjunct, in the development and redevelopment of engaging
online and hybrid courses in the learning management system (LMS).
3. Research and evaluate technologies and course materials for accessible design and appropriate use.
4. Develop and maintain instructional design models including LMS blueprints and templates, using
effective practices in Universal Design for Leaning (UDL), accessibility, inclusivity, and compliance
for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
5. Assist with the development and maintenance of guidelines for appropriate standards of quality
in courses.
6. Review and evaluate courses to ensure quality, alignment, relevance, and assessment of student
learning outcomes in accordance with HCC's standards of quality for online learning.
7. Assist instructors with the improvement of instructional strategies, development of course
materials, and integration of student learning assessments.

Training and Support
1. Train instructors in the use of the LMS and other hardware and software needed for teaching
and learning along with effective practices for course and assignment development.
2. Work with Information Technology (IT) and HCC Online staff to provide troubleshooting
and technical support for LMS tools.
3. Assist with the course archive process in the LMS.
4. Track and report instructor and staff participation in professional development and training.
5. Coordinate support for and adoption of open education resources (OER) and alternate delivery
methods and programs across the institution.
6. Maintain current knowledge of emerging trends and effective practices including OER,
copyright, open licensing, instructional design, and online pedagogy through professional
reading, discussion lists, networks, and conferences as appropriate.

Other:
1. Assist Academic Deans with duties and projects as assigned.
2. Participate on committees, task forces, and work groups as assigned.
3. Assist in ensuring the success of the College Mission and Shared Performance Expectations.
4. Seek solutions to difficult situations through listening for understanding, empathy, and
honest, open communication.
5. Interact professionally with coworkers to accomplish common tasks. Balance team and

community people who interact with the College including prompt response to faculty and
student needs.
7. Must have the ability to react well under pressure.
8. Maintain strict confidentiality as required.
9. Perform other duties assigned.

Required: Bachelor's degree in related field or discipline. Experience in higher education. Experience working with diverse groups of people. Online teaching experience. Experience working with course development in learning management systems. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Strong organization and analytical skills. Ability to manage projects and design, implement and evaluate programs.

Preferred: Master's degree in Instructional Technology or Design, Educational Technology, Information Systems, Instructor Development or education-related discipline. Experience in the application of teaching and pedagogy techniques and information/instructional technology. Experience developing and designing online courses and training that includes working with faculty and other content experts, in person and at a distance. Background in classroom teaching both face-to-face and online. Experience in professional development and educational technology. Experience working with course development in learning management systems, preferably Canvas. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Project manage met and leadership skills.

Other
Valid driver's license with no major infractions for the past five years required.
