Job Description

Bioinformatician Positions

HHMI & UT Health San Antonio

Bioinformatics positions are available in the HHMI laboratory of Prof. Reuben Harris at UT Health San Antonio. Dr. Harris is the new Chair of the Biochemistry and Structural Biology Department. His research program spans the fields of cancer biology and virology and is supported by HHMI, CPRIT, and multiple grants from the NIH including an NCI program project on breast cancer mutagenesis and a new NIAID center grant for anti-viral drug development.

The Harris lab has deep interests in understanding the molecular mechanisms of tumor and virus evolution with strong emphasis on the APOBEC family of DNA/RNA editing enzymes. Important problems in cancer biology and virology are addressed using approaches from multiple disciplines including molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell biology, structural biology, immunotherapy, and molecular virology. Collaborations are also key to success, and lab members are involved in multiple collaborations. The overall responsibility of the candidates will be to develop and apply cutting-edge genomic technologies to study the mutational landscape of APOBEC-driven tumors.

The ideal candidate should have MS/PhD in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, or similar area of study. Relevant experience must be supported with a track record for success such as high-impact publications, scientific presentations, etc. Experience with data analysis involving high-throughput molecular assays such as DNA and RNA-seq, ATAC and ChIP-seq, single-cell technologies etc. is indispensable as well as experience with programming languages such as R, Python, or similar. The successful candidates should have excellent organization and communication skills, strong personal motivation, and ability to work well as a part of a team. English language proficiency is required.

The Biochemistry and Structural Biology Department is in the midst of an exciting and transformative expansion, which will strengthen existing areas including structural biology, DNA repair, cancer biology, and virology, and enable growth in many new directions. A strong bioinformatics team will be essential for achieving this goal.

Interested candidates should submit to Dr Dean Bacich a brief statement of interest and CV (bacich@uthscsa.edu ). Salaries will be proportionate to level of experience with entry-level postdoctoral associates ranging from $60,000 – $85,000 and senior associates ranging from $90,000 – $180,000.
