Job Description

The Student Ambassador Mentorship Program (SAMP) is an equity-driven, peer-mentoring initiative that supports women, nonbinary, and transgender students who identify with at least one of the following categories: 1. Person of color or Hispanic/Latinx, 2. Student with a disability, 3. First-generation college student, 4. LGBTQIA+, 5. Pell-grant eligible. SAMP’s core values are Leadership, Professional Development, and Community. SAMP aims to provide on-going leadership and professional development training to prepare and support peer-mentors in their role as campus leaders. Through peer-mentoring, programming and individualized support from the Success Coach, SAMP strives to support academically at-risk students to increase their GPA and attain their degree at Holyoke Community College.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Development, the Success Coach is responsible for helping Ambassadors (mentors) develop skills, behaviors and habits that contribute to their success as peer-mentors to their cohorts of Scholars (mentees). The Success Coach assists the Ambassadors in managing their caseload of students by providing appropriate outreach, intervention, and referrals for Scholars when needed. The Success Coach is responsible for tracking the academic success of all Ambassadors and Scholars and performing constant, active outreach to unresponsive students in the form of phone calls, emails, tabling, text messaging, and letters home.

 

 

  • Promotes persistence and completion of SAMP by maintaining a caseload of participants.
  • Maintains appropriate records and data of student caseload using innovative platforms such as EAB Navigate, MentorCollective, Google Suite, Microsoft Excel
  • Monitors progress of students in caseload with check-ins, scheduled meetings or proactive outreach and communication, responding to students’ questions, concerns and needs
  • Conducts holistic coaching through individual sessions that help students assess their academic performance and overcome barriers to success.
  • Assist the SAMP leadership staff in the development and implementation of program. Plans events, trainings, and workshops in accordance with the program's core values.
  • Performs outreach to campus partners to present information and materials for student recruitment: oversee student applications and department interest form, conduct interviews.
  • Fosters community and belonging by leading the peer mentorship component of SAMP and monitor weekly mentor reports.
  • Assists students in developing self-efficacy by identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding success in their peer-mentoring role.
  • Collaborates with campus partners as necessary.
  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
  • Monitors Ambassador internship experiences; coordinate internship placement, review learning plans, conduct assessments throughout the term.
  • Provides constant, active outreach to unresponsive students in the form of phone calls, emails, tabling, text messaging, and USPS mail.

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Counseling, Human Development, Psychology, Education, Social Work or related discipline;
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in professional coaching, academic advising, counseling, or related field, preferably serving underrepresented student populations;
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance and effectively deliver programs to diverse audiences on campus through your value and understanding of knowledge-of-self, language, culture, and community;
  • Demonstrated experience, personal or professional, in navigating systems of higher education from a bi-cultural understanding in any of the following communities: Hispanic/Latinx community, Disability community, BIPOC community, LGBTQIA2+ community, First-generation college student community, communities in poverty;
  • Problem-solving and professional communication skills;
  • Demonstrated experience in student development strategies and high-impact practices;
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of a twenty-first century comprehensive community college;
  • Ability to practice unconditional positive regard/decorum while providing critical feedback in a constructive manner that allows for student learning;
  • Organized and able to manage event planning and student caseload simultaneously;
  • Demonstrated leadership in the creation and development of new and successful projects and programs;
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff and student body; and generative thinking skills;
  • Well-established and easily upheld professional boundaries with students of all ages.

  • Skills: Candidates must have strong analytical and problem solving skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Abilities: Ability to balance multiple demands and effectively organize and manage time and tasks; Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse university community;
  • Understanding that appropriate, professional boundaries with students serve as the building blocks in the foundation of the Success Coach and student relationship.
  • Fluent in Spanish.

Full-time, MCCC Unit Professional position
MCCC Title: Special Programs Coordinator


Salary Range: 
Grade 4; Minimum $ 52,754-$55,442/year. Actual salary will be commensurate with education and experience in accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full State benefits package.
 

Hours:
 37.5 hrs.
Funding Source: Success Appropriation funds
