Job Description


IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering, THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in experimental methods with applications in ship hydrodynamics under the supervision of Professor Frederick Stern and Dr. Yugo Sanada. The initial appointment is full-time for 2 years, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and availability of continued funding. This is an immediate opening and applications will be considered until a successful candidate has been identified. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Qualifications:

Required Education:

  • Ph.D. in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or closely related discipline prior to starting this position is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in experimental methods with applications in ship hydrodynamics for physical understanding and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) validation data, including use of wave basin and/or towing tank facilities, free running models and tracking systems, and both global and local flow measurement systems along with use of integrated computational fluid dynamics for design of experiments and in support physical understanding and development of reduced order models.
  • Highest priority will be given to candidates with demonstrated expertise in advanced local flow measurement systems such as particle image velocimetry (PIV) and/or particle tracking velocimetry (PTV).
  • Strong coding experience and skills using HPC with MPI and programming languages (Fortran or C)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
