Job Description

Post-Doctoral Associates

Departments of Pharmacology and Biomedical Engineering

University of California, Davis, USA

Post-Doctoral Associate positions are open for highly motivated PhD/MD scientists to join the Cardiac Signaling Lab in the Departments of Pharmacology and Biomedical Engineering, University of California – Davis, USA.

The postdocs will join our interdisciplinary research group, directed by Dr. Ye Chen-Izu and Dr. Leighton T. Izu, to develop innovative technology and investigate heart diseases in a highly stimulating and collaborative environment. Our team combines experimental investigation with mathematical modeling to study the heart functions as a smart pump. We take a three-pronged approach: a) Basic research to decipher mechano-chemo-electro-transduction mechanisms that enable the heart to sense the mechanical load and autoregulate contractile strength to maintain cardiac output. This mechanism is important for the heart’s adaptive response to physiological load changes, but it fails under pathological overload in heart diseases. b) Translational work using state-of-the-art research to develop advanced high-content and high-throughput cardiotoxicity screening technology for pharmaceutical drug discoveries. c) Develop big data analysis to decipher the patterns in molecular changes in various heart diseases and the complex effects of drugs. We also work closely with clinicians to develop mathematical methods to risk-stratify patients with heart diseases to fulfill the goal of precision medicine of better tailoring treatment to patients.

The postdocs will receive competitive salaries and benefits that provide good living in Davis, California (a charming college town near the Napa Valley vineyards). We highly value and encourage postdocs to have broad curiosity, independent thinking, and confidence to explore new frontiers. We are also committed to helping postdocs apply for grants, build professional networks, and advance their scientific careers.

The candidates should have training and expertise in one of the research areas below:

a.Basic Research: PhD/MD with training in cellular electrophysiology or fluorescencemicroscopy, with expertise and knowledge in studying cardiac excitation-contraction andheart disease mechanisms.

b.Translational Research: PhD with training in optical imaging instrumentation andtechniques, fluorescence microscopy, imaging software. We are developing High-ContentHigh-Throughput Cardiotoxicity Screening technology for drug R&D.

c. Big Data Analysis: Ph.D. in applied mathematics, bioinformatics, physics/biophysics, andconversant in nonlinear dynamics, linear algebra, and probability theory.

Please email your application materials to Dr. Ye Chen-Izu: ychenizu@ucdavis.edu .

-Cover letter stating your training and skills and your scientific interests.

-Curriculum vitae (with your contact information and citizen/visa status).

-A list of 3 referees who have direct knowledge of your training and scientific work.

-The postdoc positions are funded by NIH grants in 2023-2030 and open until filled.
