Postdoctoral Research Associate-Rigorous Inverse Scattering Problem Solutions, Neutron Spectroscopy

Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Job Description

Requisition Id 10070

Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on computational and theoretical underpinnings for quantum magnetism research.  One specific formalism is using semi-classical approaches for spin systems.  While not a strict constraint, the emphasis is on observables for neutron scattering.  This individual will collaborate on Sun(n)y code development with Dr. Kipton Barros of Los Alamos National Laboratory and on theoretical underpinnings with Dr. Cristian Batista of the University of Tennessee.

The successful candidates will also have the opportunity to pursue their own scientific research using the world-class suite of neutron diffractometers and neutron spectrometers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

ORNL is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High-Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) are world-leading facilities and the scientific center of a diverse, international, and inclusive neutron scattering community. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate you will be a member of a team of neutron scattering scientists, computational scientists, engineers, enterprise software developers, and machine learning experts at both neutron research facilities.

This position resides in the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD).  The successful candidate will be selected via a panel interview process.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to a computational library that HFIR and SNS users may use for cutting edge quantum materials research
  • Become an active member of the Su(n)ny (https://github.com/SunnySuite/Sunny.jl ) software development team
  • Work with Neutron Scattering Division research teams to utilize Su(n)ny for interpretation of inelastic neutron scattering data on quantum materials
  • Publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and presenting the research in conferences

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Development of codes for data analysis or physics simulation
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate research results in peer-reviewed publications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Interest in bridging experimental and theoretical aspects of neutron scattering
  • Interest in developing advanced computational science skills, including algorithm design, parallel and distributed computation, and advanced Julia usage

Please submit three letters of reference when applying to this position. You can upload these directly to your application or have them sent topostdocrecruitment@ornl.gov with the position title and number referenced in the subject line.

Please include a discussion of your research interests and how neutron scattering can support your plan for research during your time at ORNL in your cover letter with your application.
