Position Summary

The New Mexico Tumor Registry (NMTR) is a population-based cancer registry that has served New Mexico since 1966.  The NMTR gathers, maintains, analyzes, and disseminates cancer surveillance data and supports scientific investigations of cancer. The NMTR is a division of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC).  The NMTR is a founding member of the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program and we have been continuously funded by the SEER Program since 1973.  Data collected by NMTR is routinely used to document and track trends in cancer occurrence and care, support scientific research and inform public health policy.  The NMTR is seeking a highly motivated, full-time Supv, Data Collections/NMTR position.

The successful candidate will participate in the following activities:

·         Supervises personnel which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.

·         Directs work assignments and allocation of data collection priorities necessary data identification and abstraction requirements in support of on-going research and project activities.

·         Provides on-going evaluation, training, and development of skilled data collection staff to ensure quality of data, uniformity and appropriateness of methodology, and compliance with Federal, State, and/or University data collection requirements.

·         Reviews and monitors day-to-day data collection activities to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.

·         Develops and implements processes and programs that contribute to the cost-effective and efficient collection of data for research purposes.

·         Researches medical and other relevant facilities, clinics, physician offices and pathology laboratories and identifies opportunities for gaining access to cancer data or for conducting special projects and studies, reviews data for accuracy and completeness, and enters information into database. Serves as liaison between facilities across NM and AZ.

·         Travels to field sites in New Mexico and Arizona as often as one week per month to establish new data collection resources and/or monitor current on-site collection activity.

·         Develops recordkeeping procedures and manages appropriate data collection tracking programs in accordance with applicable Federal, State, and University regulations, policies, and standards.

·         Participates in the establishment and implementation of short- and long-range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.

·         Represents the organization at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies. Works with Program Manager to host yearly conference for local cancer registry organization.

·         Implements and monitors confidentiality rules and requirements as designated by Federal, State, and University regulations and policies.

·         Reviews pathology reports, cytology reports, bone marrow reports, autopsy reports, death certificates, disease indices and radiation, oncology and physician logs to identify possible cancer cases.

·         Develops training material on special interest cases or based on funding agency guidelines and presents training to colleagues.

·         Works on special studies/projects as assigned and/or works with researchers on special case reviews and to study cancer data, coding rules and requirements.

·         Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 146 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico’s cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1361 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 544 (40%) patients who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 102 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $36.2 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published 930 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 530 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified and National Cancer Registrars Association, Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) OR Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Biology or Biological Sciences, at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified and National Cancer Registrars Association, Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) OR Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)/Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified and National Cancer Registrars Association, Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)

Preferred Qualifications

·         Experience working in an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center

·         Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) with 5 years directly related experience

·         Experience working in SEER/NCI State Cancer Registry

·         Supervisory experience
