Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

 Iowa State University is seeking applications for a newly established postdoctoral research associate position focused on research, grant writing, project management, and student mentoring. This position is affiliated with the laboratories for functional textiles and protective clothing (LABS) located in the Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management in the College of Human Sciences.

LABS conducts multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary research and develop new polymers/textiles, smart materials, and clothing systems and subsystems for human safety, health, and wellbeing. LABS research is focused on human physiology, ergonomics, and the functionality of clothing systems to achieve maximum performance.

The research program includes the:

  • study and development of advanced materials and polymers
  • understanding mechanisms and model development
  • simulation of hazards
  • development of lab measurement technologies
  • analysis and prediction of clothing performance
  • development of new testing methods and standards
  • development and application of advanced manufacturing technologies
  • development of new sensing and wearable technologies
  • development of new technologies for clothing product maintenance and treatment

The research program shares in Iowa State University (ISU)’s comment and mission to create, share, and apply knowledge by effective integration of science, engineering, technology, and humanity to make the state and the world a better place.

This position reports to the director of LABS, the Norma Scott Lloyd Chair of Textiles and Clothing, and the Department chair.

Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not limited to the following:

  • Design and synthesize polymers with customizable structures and functions
  • Develop functional materials via advanced technologies such as 3D printing and electro-spinning
  • Apply developed functional materials to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) development
  • Research PPE contamination prevention and decontamination procedure
  • Study and model fine particle transportation and deposition in the PPE system
  • Contribute to the grant writing and submission to both internal and external CFPs
  • Write manuscripts and conference abstracts to disseminate research findings
  • Disseminate research findings in regional, national, and international exhibitions and conferences
  • Assist mentoring graduate/undergraduate students in research projects, class projects, and other activities, including the honor program.


Required Minimum Qualifications:

PhD degree at time of appointment in chemistry, polymer/fiber science, material science/engineering, apparel and textiles or other related field.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated understanding of polymer/textile material and apparel products in affecting human function, safety, and health.
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing and electro-spinning  
  • Experience with developing polymer-based sensor/actuator/adaptor.
  • Evidence of scholarly potential (publications, working papers, scholarly presentation, creative output).
  • Training and experience of grant writing and research project management.
  • Demonstrated research experience in related fields, lab environment, and material development and evaluation.
  • Specializes at advanced material development with customized structures and multi-functions.
