The Department of Horticulture at Michigan State University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, fixed-term (non-tenure system), Assistant Professor with an 85% research, 5% teaching, and 10% outreach assignment. The position start date is anticipated to be in March 1, 2023. 

The successful candidate is expected to develop and manage field and laboratory experiments in the area of pomology, be an effective communicator, mentor of undergraduate and graduate students, contribute lectures and develop curriculum for tree fruit production and related courses and engage with stakeholders and institutional and professional service. 

Research responsibilities include the development, implementation, and management of applied pomological experiments to assess pollination and fruit set biology, precision management of crop load, plant growth regulator efficacy, and implementation and/or development of novel technologies that mitigate thinning and improve yield and fruit quality. The successful candidate will have a strong background in experimental design, statistics, and empirical modeling to predict physiological/developmental responses of tree fruit organs to environmental factors, abiotic stress, and horticultural manipulation. The candidate will be expected to train/mentor undergraduate and graduate students, communicate effectively with stakeholders and build relationships with the Michigan tree fruit industry

Doctorate -Horticulture, Pomology, Plant Physiology

An earned Ph.D. in Horticulture, Pomology, Plant Physiology or related plant science; documented publication record in the areas of pomology; demonstrated ability to conduct and publish independent, original and innovative research; experience in computational and statistical modeling; excellent oral and written communication skills; experience with undergraduate education/teaching of pomology and/or horticulture; and, experience working collaboratively, both as a leader and a team member.

Postdoctoral experience in tree fruit physiology; experience in the development of competitive grant proposals; experience in orchard system management; and, experience working in a diverse environment and/or utilizing a variety of communication methods designed for broad undergraduate, graduate student and stakeholder success.
