Job Description

Princeton University is seeking an inaugural Director to design, commission, and manage a new Quantum Cleanroom. As part of a broader investment in support of Princeton's world-leading research in quantum devices and materials, Princeton plans to construct a new cleanroom tailored to the exacting requirements of this field, supporting the fabrication of electronic and photonic devices in a wide range of materials including silicon, III-Vs, diamond, two-dimensional materials, and superconductors. The key aims of the facility are to maintain a high level of cleanliness and process control, and flexibility to meet the future needs of this rapidly changing field. This cleanroom will coexist with the general-purpose Micro-Nano Fabrication Center (MNFC) cleanroom housed in the Princeton Materials Institute. The responsibilities of the director are twofold. First, the Director will assist with the scoping, design, and commissioning of the new Quantum Cleanroom, including the facility and equipment purchases, and installation. Second, until the new cleanroom is commissioned, the Director will serve as the primary operational leader of the Quantum Device Nano Lab (QDNL), an existing 1,400 sq. ft. cleanroom in Jadwin Hall dedicated to quantum device fabrication requiring high levels of precision and stability. Upon completion of the Quantum Cleanroom, the Director's sole responsibility will be leading the new facility. Additional staff will be hired to support the transition and operation of the new facility. Successful candidates will have a strong vision for all aspects of the Quantum Cleanroom and deep technical knowledge of cleanroom processes and infrastructure. Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills will help foster a positive and productive culture for the Quantum Cleanroom, including effective relationships between the staff, student and postdoctoral researchers, external users, faculty, and administrators. The Director will work closely with faculty committees on the design of the facility and setting policies and priorities. In the existing QDNL facility, the Director will be responsible for managing all aspects of the cleanroom operation including safety, access, tool maintenance and acquisition, user training, inventory, and waste management, as well as consulting with users on process development and troubleshooting. Successful candidates are expected to have experience in the operations of an academic cleanroom as well as expertise in key technical areas including e-beam and photolithography, physical vapor deposition, etching, and metrology. The Director works closely with other administrative staff members on issues such as billing, external relations, computer support, and other general administrative needs of the facility. The Director will also work closely with faculty committees on setting policies and priorities. Essential Qualifications: *M.S. or Ph.D. degree (preferred) in a science or engineering discipline, and at least 6 years of cleanroom experience in an academic (or equivalent) cleanroom setting. *Substantial hands-on experience in all cleanroom technology areas including e-beam and photolithography, physical vapor deposition, etching, and metrology *Knowledge of safety and health issues relevant to cleanrooms, life safety, equipment, clean operations and protocols, and hazardous materials handling and disposal *Strong experience in leadership and management of personnel with a willingness and patience to both learn and train *Excellent communication skills are required to work and interface with all stakeholders of the facility *Ability to lift at least 20 pounds Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, a resume documenting their experience and skill set, and a list of 3 or more references. Application materials should be submitted online at https://puwebp.princeton.edu/AcadHire/position/29165. This position is subject to the University's background check policy.
