Montgomery College’s, Chemistry Department is seeking a full-time Instructional Lab Coordinator. Work hours are typically between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Wednesday 2:00pm – 10:30pm. This is a bargaining, non-exempt grade 27 position. Position is located in Germantown, Maryland.

The Instructional Lab Coordinator, under minimal supervision, will oversee and coordinate the daily operations and activities of assigned instructional laboratories. The work involves setting up and organizing work areas for classroom instruction, and coordinating with and providing instructional assistance services to faculty. Plan activities, order and pick-up supplies and materials, maintain facility, check and maintain equipment, and schedule student assistants and staff when required in order to meet instructional objectives. The incumbent follows specific guidelines developed by faculty/supervisor in providing instructional support in the laboratory.

Contacts are with administrators, faculty, staff, students and representatives of external organizations such as vendors, instructors, and industry specific professional associations.
 

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Set up lab exercises prior to the start of classes
  • Organize and set-up equipment, laboratory reagents, and instruments and tools for use by students.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment for proper operation.
  • Maintain the laboratories and ensure that they are clean and in good order.
  • Ensure chemicals and equipment are available when needed for the labs and that they are properly stored and secured.
  • Train and supervise student assistants, assigned to the program.
  • Coordinate and assign work, monitor and provide training on safe work practices and procedures.
  • Place orders to maintain an inventory of equipment, materials and supplies.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, clean and orderly learning environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Four (4) years of experience working in research, industry or in an academic setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques of assigned subject area work, tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions.
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment and educational materials employed in assigned instructional laboratory, and administrative practices and procedures, including purchasing and record keeping.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the principles and practices of learning as applied to the role of instructional support staff and laboratory procedures.
  • Demonstrated skill in using word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and budgeting programs, e-mail, the internet, using personal computers and instructional technology.
  • Experience setting up and organizing a laboratory exercise.
  • Prior experience in the operation and running of a laboratory; working independently and as part of a team to accomplish work assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lift up to 40 pounds (on occasion) without assistance.

 Licenses and Certifications: A valid driver’s license and evidence of a good driving record may be required.

Salary Range: $29.58 - $47.32 per hour.  Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity, new hires are typically placed between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range.  This position does not qualify for remote work.
