Position Summary:
Assistant Professor of Communication Studies (tenure track), Public Relations and Leadership in the School of Communication Studies, Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach courses in public relations principles, writing, cases and campaigns, public communication research methods, and leadership and communication. Additional teaching assignment may include courses in the candidate’s own area of expertise at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Advise PRSSA and help students network with the industry. Contribute to the development of a program in leadership and public communication, leadership and advocacy, and/or non-profit and social justice leadership. Contribute to curricular development in public relations and leadership; pursue successful research/creative activity agenda; graduate-level advising; and provide service as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
The School of Communication Studies seeks a colleague specializing in public relations and leadership communication. PhD required in public relations, communication, mass communication, or a related field. ABD applicants will be considered if all requirements for the PhD will be completed by August 15, 2023. If all degree requirements are not completed by August 15, 2023, a term, non-tenure track appointment may be offered in accordance with University policy (https://policies.siu.edu/personnel-policies/chapter2/ch2 -faps/conting.php).
Expertise in public relations and leadership communication should be demonstrated by graduate coursework, relevant college or university teaching experience. Scholarly accomplishment must be demonstrated by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, or book/s. Must show evidence of, or potential for, excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, undergraduate professional development, and graduate-level advising.
Preferred Qualifications:
We welcome all applicants, but we particularly seek scholars working from the intersections of public relations, leadership, advocacy, and social justice. Preference will be given to candidates who have professional experience in public relations and leadership communication, and/or with expertise or interest in topic areas that complement one or more of the research and teaching specializations in the School: gender, sexuality, and relational communication; intercultural communication and pedagogy; performance studies; and/or rhetoric and society.

Communication Studies is a School within the College of Liberal Arts. It offers B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Undergraduate students can specialize in PR, or choose the general communication specialization. The graduate program emphasizes the interplay of communication and culture through four curricular areas: gender, sexuality, and relational communication; intercultural communication and pedagogy; performance studies; and rhetoric and society. School-sponsored co-curricular activities include the Marion Kleinau Theatre and the Public Relations Student Society of America.
