Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Supervises daily operations of the genetically closed beef cattle herd at the Wye Research and Education Center. The program maintains a large registered purebred herd of Angus cattle and conducts basic and applied research and education activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • B.S. Degree in Animal Husbandry or related field i.e. Animal Science, Veterinarian Science.

Experience:
  • 5 years experience managing a beef/cattle herd
  • 3 years of supervisory experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must have a full knowledge of farm implements and set-up for daily cattle management. 
  • Effective communication skills; written and oral. 
  • Computer skills.

Other:
  • The position requires an incumbent to possess and maintain a  Class C (non-commercial) driver’s license or equivalent valid in the State of Maryland with less than six (6) points.
  • This position requires an incumbent to possess and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland with less than six (6) points or obtain one within 24 months of employment.

Additional Certifications:

Required:
  • Maryland Public Agency Applicator’s Certificate (obtained within the first year of employment).
  • Maryland Nutrient Management Certification (obtained within two years of employment).

Physical Demands

Ability to climb and endure extensive walking, standing and lifting. Should be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to wear and work in personal protective clothing/equipment. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. Must be available for evening, weekend, and holiday work schedules.
