Essential Job Duties

The Rissman Lab, part of the Department of Biological Sciences at North Carolina State University, uses transgenic mouse models in combination with molecular, pharmacological, and behavioral analyses to investigate the mechanisms underlying drug addiction.

We are looking to hire a passionate, self-motivated, positive, and collaborative research assistant (RA) to assist with lab maintenance, coordination of operations related to multiple projects, and student mentoring in laboratory procedures. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with lab supplies stocking and organization, conducting qPCR, Westerns and immunoprecipitation and running experiments.

Most importantly, the RA will be eager to learn new techniques and expand his/her/their scientific knowledge, an excellent problem solver with the ability to troubleshoot and learn complex tasks effectively, organized and a careful record keeper, and able to interact positively with all levels of staff. Ideally, the RA will also have understanding of genetics as well as basic and advanced cellular and molecular techniques ranging from immunohistochemistry and quantitative PCR to immunoprecipitation, Cut&Run, and RNA seq.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree in a science (i.e. neuroscience, biology, etc.), or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 2 or more years of independent research experience, or substantive relevant independent experience and education. 
  • Experience with DNA and RNA thermocyclers and LiCore machines for quantitative western blotting
  • Previous hands-on experience working as a technician or research assistant in a laboratory

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated strengths in collaboration and communication
  • Proficient computer skills (PC and/or Mac, Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, graph programs, statistics, etc.). 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer at least 2 years of laboratory experience
  • Knowledge of R for statistics and graphics would be ideal
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, and attention to detail
  • Background and training in molecular biology
