Job Summary
Performs complex accounting tasks such as preparing financial statements including balance sheets, cash flow statements and IRS reports. Reviews and analyzes general ledger account balances. Provides guidance to lower-level accounting personnel.
Department HR manager. Duties include comprehensive payroll distributions to align with reporting requirements to department, college, VP, Grad school, and faculty affairs. Implementation and development to advance department goals for strategic hiring plans – working in conjunction with department leadership. Also required experience in start to finish hiring (offer letters, background checks, Visas, work-authorizations, Kronos, etc.). Must have a mastery of hiring procedures to meet requirements for international employees, graduate student work assignments, research staff, and all department personnel.
Responsibilities
  • Prepares University financial statements and reports, reviewing cash flow reports and fund management. Payroll must be set up with sub-account coding to indicate employee status (e.g. work authorization end dates, postdoc contract renewals, academic vs. research effort, etc.) Sole manager for exception reports and IRS required reports.
  • Reconciles external financial data with University data and resolves discrepancies. This includes external postdoctoral fellowships, MOU agreements, external awards, etc.
  • Supports equity and inclusive payroll practices and policy.
  • Maintains all personnel files and responds to requests for information for audits.
  • Reviews all payroll reports and processes FYSC and off-cycle changes that align with contracts and semester assignments.
  • Assists department, college, and VP with year-end closing for all payroll accruals and distributions. Review PTO accruals to ensure staff understand their carry-forward. Facilitates and process year-end adjustments.
  • Answers questions, corrects errors, resolves accounting related issues and provides financial or other information as requested.
  • Develops and maintains department databases.
  • Interprets policies and recommends internal controls.
  • Provides guidance to lower level accountants.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalency, plus two years professional accounting experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices, knowledge of accounting software, advanced spreadsheet skills, the ability to write queries and macros and demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills.
    Certifications as a Certified Public Accountant may be preferred for certain positions.
    Preferences
    Provides all essential accounting and HR/payroll management functions noted above. Contributes broad and specific knowledge and perspective to department colleagues in accounting and payroll areas. Experience in other accounting areas strongly preferred for optimal cross-training among accounting staff.
    Successful applicants will have a strong background working with the tuition benefit program. Demonstrated ability to multi-task, and strong communications skills required.
