The MAE department currently has 49 tenure-track faculty, 6 non-tenure-track teaching faculty, and 15 staff members. The Department has an enrollment of over 1,200 undergraduates and 400 graduate students. The department is housed in Engineering Building III, a four-story, 250,000-square foot facility built in 2010. NC State’s location on Centennial Campus, combined with its proximity to the Research Triangle Park and neighboring universities, provides extensive opportunities for academic and industrial interaction and collaboration. Essential Job Duties

The position will serve as the main lead technician and caretaker of all Undergraduate laboratories in the department. The position will maintain all equipment in the laboratories and prepare experiments before every semester for laboratory classes. The position will also be responsible for ensuring research facility operations in the department which includes filing work orders for lab updates and maintenance. The person will also coordinate equipment inventory which is required by the university every year.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Maintain a clean and organized lab environment.
  • Perform general mechanical maintenance using both power and hand tools.
  • Aid University Researchers in experimental plan execution.
  • Assisting with all tasks related to the establishment, maintenance, and operation of undergraduate laboratories
  • Ensuring safe operations of all research laboratories working with Principal Investigators and graduate students in the department.
  • Assisting faculty in the training of laboratory Teaching Assistants at the beginning of the semester
  • Filing work orders as and when needed and ensuring work completion by University Facilities in department research laboratories.
  • Be the lead in completing the annual equipment inventory
  • Assisting with maintenance of equipment, spaces, and other tasks.
  • Serves as building liaison for Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department in EBIII and the West Annex complex. As building liaison, serves as the contact person between the department and facilities in all matters of building concerns for the MAE Department. This includes ensuring that building residents are aware of power and water outages.
  • Works with the fire marshals to meet fire equipment code in labs and offices.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree in Engineering plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 90+ pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Must demonstrate and model effective mental concentration, visual attention and manipulative skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and required knowledge of calipers, micrometers and laser scanning arm

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of engineering equipment working in electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems
  • Ability to operate mechanical fabrication equipment
  • Ability to communicate with students and Teaching Assistants
  • Knowledge in operating, demonstrating and training of specialized devices as milling machines, lathes, grinders, water jet and 3D Printers.
  • Knowledge in Auto-car or Solid Works for the water jet and 3D-Printers.
