HIV– Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders – Infectious Disease
The UAB Center for Addiction and Pain Prevention and Intervention (CAPPI) is seeking applications for a 2 to 3-year fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Ellen Eaton who specializes in infectious complications of addiction. Dr. Eaton’s laboratory is in the Department of Medicine/Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is available. Her research is focused on HIV-prevention and treatment in persons with substance use disorders and mental illness. Dr. Eaton uses mixed-methods, implementation science, and epidemiologic approaches to evaluate HIV risk behaviors, substance use patterns, barriers to evidence based HIV prevention and opioid use disorder treatments, and interventions to integrate HIV prevention and treatment for vulnerable populations in rural and Southern regions of the U.S, reverse innovation translating interventions from developing countries to the Deep South.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in clinical psychology, epidemiology, implementation science, or public health with an emphasis on substance use, or related field with a strong background in human subjects research, HIV, and qualitative and/or quantitative analysis. Strong communication and writing skills are required. The ideal candidate would be willing to move to Birmingham for the position.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to
- Project management
- Supporting development of data collection tools (questionnaires, interview guides)
- Qualitative data collection
- Analysis of existing qualitative and quantitative data
- Leading and supporting manuscript writing
- Leading and supporting grant proposal development and writing

- PhD
Additional Qualifications
- Experience in HIV/AIDS programs and services is highly desirable
- Experience working with homeless and/or substance using populations is highly desirable
Ample opportunities for professional development, mentorship, academic and research leadership, publication, and applied knowledge translation will be provided through the interdisciplinary training environment in the UAB School of Medicine and Division of Infectious Disease. Through her NIMH, NIAAA, and SAMHSA-funded research, Dr. Eaton collaborates closely with community partners, UAB and other U.S. faculty, and Sub-Saharan African partners with expertise in addiction, qualitative methods, epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral psychology. This opportunity involves being part of a team of interdisciplinary faculty, trainees and staff collaborating through the UAB Center for Addiction and Pain Prevention Intervention (CAPPI).
