Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative scientist for a research technician position in the laboratory of Michael Eck, MD, PhD at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School (ecklab.dana-farber.org). The Eck lab uses biochemical and structural methods to study kinases that are important in cancer. We are especially interested in understanding molecular mechanisms of kinase regulation, oncogenic activation, and drug resistance with the goal of developing novel cancer therapies. Technicians work closely with a postdoc or scientist in the lab, are included as an author on relevant publications, and often later pursue graduate or medical school. Technicians are also invited to attend a variety of departmental seminars and social events.

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the Research Technician will perform a variety of laboratory and investigative procedures including routine experimental techniques such as cloning, Western blot, protein purification, biochemical assays, and tissue culture. Technicians will need to collect, verify, record, and compile data and information in support of research.

  • Perform various molecular biology techniques such as PCR, Gibson assembly, DNA sequencing, agarose gel electrophoresis, bacterial transformation, and DNA isolation.
  • Protein expression in different expression systems, optimization of expression level, and purification methods via FPLC.
  • Protein analysis with SDS-PAGE, Coomassie staining, and Western blotting.
  • Conduct standardized biological, pharmacological, or biochemical assays.
  • Perform various investigative procedures and operate a variety of instruments and other scientific equipment.
  • Set up, adjust, calibrate, clean, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Perform cell and tissue culture following BSL-2 safety protocols.
  • Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings.
  • Keep accurate record of all work.
  • Present research updates during lab meetings.
  • Read and interpret literature applicable to research areas as required.

Qualifications

One full-time position will be filled. We are looking for candidates who have at least one year, preferably two years, of availability. Start date is spring/summer 2023.

  • Bachelor's Degree required with a major in biology, chemistry, or a related discipline. Degree may be in progress at the time of application but must be completed prior to beginning work.
  • Laboratory research experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, or a related area is highly desirable.
  • Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.
  • Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work-related issues and problems.
  • Must be able to follow standard operating procedures to ensure the safety of all members of the lab and quality of experimental results.
  • Must have attention to detail and be thorough in completing work tasks.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
