The Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) is seeking applications for a Crops IPM Entomology and Extension Specialist position at the rank of assistant professor. This 12-month (calendar year), tenure-track appointment will specialize in agroecology and management of arthropod pests of row and other crops relevant to the region. The apportionment is 50% research and 50% extension. This position will be located in Scottsbluff, Nebraska (400 miles west of Lincoln, Nebraska).

This specialist will provide leadership for insect Integrated Pest Management (IPM) research and Extension programs in western Nebraska, including the Panhandle and West Central Nebraska.
The incumbent is expected to contribute to the functioning of the Department of Entomology, the Panhandle Research, Extension and Education Center, and IANR through shared governance by accepting committee and other assignments and through contributions to a positive work environment where every person and every interaction matters.
Research: The incumbent will develop an active, successful research program that addresses IPM and agroecology of arthropod pests and beneficial species in field crops grown in the Nebraska Panhandle and West Central Districts, which supports their Extension programming. They will develop collaborative and interdisciplinary research programs with scientists at the Panhandle REEC, West Central REEC, Entomology and other departments within UNL, and other universities and agencies in the region to address current and emerging research needs. The incumbent will be expected to obtain external grants to support the research program, to publish research results in appropriate professional journals and other scholarly outlets, to advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, supervise research support staff, and to participate in regional and multidisciplinary projects, as appropriate.
Extension: The incumbent will have statewide responsibilities to develop proactive, innovative, and accessible educational programs of excellence in IPM of insect pests of wheat and rangeland, and for specialty crops in western Nebraska (principally sugar beet, dry beans, wheat, and sunflowers). For other crops, including corn and soybean, the incumbent will cooperate with other Entomology specialists and Extension educators in delivery of Extension programming in western Nebraska. The Extension program will include needs assessment, planning, marketing, teaching/delivery, and evaluation of these educational programs and materials, and providing professional development in subject matter for Extension educators. Critical needs will be identified and prioritized through discussions with stakeholders, program participants, cooperators, and Extension team members, and through program evaluation. Program emphasis will reflect the educational mission of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Entomology or a related discipline.
  • Strong training and experience with integrated management of arthropod pests, with strong preference for experience in managing arthropod pests on plants in cropping systems.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to publish in high?quality peer?reviewed journals and to present results in professional and/or public venues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining competitive extramural funding.
  • Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Postdoctoral and teaching experience.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in preparing and delivering extension programs and content.
