Posting Summary
Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking an Executive Director, Career Development Center. Reporting to the Senior Vice Chancellor (SVC) for Student Affairs, the Executive Director of the Career Development Center (CDC) is responsible for providing leadership and the strategic vision for the RU-N CDC. The Executive Director creates and leads the execution of the career services strategy for the University, serving all schools at Rutgers-Newark and encompassing communications/marketing, outreach, employer relations, budget management, research & assessment, staff training, and stakeholder (e.g. students, faculty, senior administrators, alumni) engagement.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following.
  • Provides the fiscal oversight of RU-N CDC’s budget, and for generating additional resources through fundraising and grant writing
  • Supports student success and uses best practices with regard to the operation of a comprehensive career development office within a large, thriving, urban college environment, including enhancing career exploration, preparation, and placement
  • Strengths and maintains employer outreach by cultivating and fostering relationships with corporate, nonprofit, and government stakeholders to broaden internship and career opportunities for university students, and forging collaborative partnerships with faculty and senior university administrators to ensure that service planning, design, and delivery are aligned with campus and university goals
  • Oversees the career development and counseling programs to provide high-quality, innovative professional development services for the university’s undergraduate and graduate students from all schools, to ensure that RU-N students are best positioned to compete for opportunities in today’s competitive global marketplace
  • Develops and monitors the department’s long-range strategic plan, using best practices and a strong commitment to internal and external data collection, analysis, and ongoing program evaluation
  • Serves as Chair of the Career Development Liaison Team which will coordinate career development initiatives, resources, and events with all career-related personnel across all schools at Rutgers-Newark

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
Minimum Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, psychology, human resources, student personnel, adult education, business administration (MBA) or a related field
  • 7-10 years of full-time experience in career services or work force development, with a minimum of five years of experience in staff supervision and leadership. Must be able to effectively direct existing, comprehensive career services programs, and develop new ones on his/her own initiative
  • Experience managing budgets and providing oversight for hiring of staff and performance evaluations
  • Experience using career services applications/software (i.e. Handshake, 12Twenty, UConnect) and awareness of legal and ethical issues related to managing such applications
  • A successful track record in career services, including employer relations, assessment, talent acquisition, student engagement and counseling

  • Extensive knowledge in the use of the latest technology and trends in career services, including job market trends, recruitment practices, employer relations, job search strategies, and career counseling

  • Creativity, good judgment, service-oriented, professionalism, and dedication to sound principles of student development and career development as a discipline.
  • Ability to combine a data-driven approach with a student-centered philosophy, enabling agile decision-making for the benefit of stakeholder needs

  • Must have a high level of multicultural competence (knowledge, awareness, and skills) for working with a highly diverse student community
  • Knowledge of student affairs and academic affairs, and the ability to develop partnerships with academic departments, faculty members, alumni, development, and senior administrators
  • Position may require travel and some evening and weekend hours
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a higher education setting preferred, with a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, social, and educational needs of a highly diverse campus community.

Immunization Requirements


Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster upon eligibility and upload proof of same. Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals , if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Additional infection control and safety policies may apply.
