Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Computational Materials Modeling
The George Mason University, Department of Physics and Astronomy, is seeking applicants for 2 Postdoctoral Research Fellows to work with Professor Yuri Mishin on modeling and simulation of physical properties of materials.
George Mason has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.
Responsibilities:

The successful candidates will perform research on modeling and computer simulation of metallic and ceramic materials. The work is aimed at improving the fundamental understanding of mechanical and thermodynamic properties of material interfaces. The methodology includes large-scale molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations with classical interatomic potentials. It may also involve developing new interatomic potentials in the traditional or machine-learning formats.
The position is available from Spring 2023 for 2 years with funding available for additional time dependent on performance.
Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or related field;
  • A successful applicant is expected to have a relevant theoretical background, especially in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, and experience in atomistic computer simulations; and
  • Experience working in UNIX/Linux high-performance computing environments is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Programming skills in Python and one of the compiled languages (C/C++ or Fortran);
  • Familiarity with DFT calculations is desirable but not strictly required;
  • Experience in using LAMMPS, OVITO, and (optionally) VASP; and
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
