Job Description
Position Objective
The responsibilities of this position include the conception, design, execution, and data analysis of experiments that focus on quantifying the transmembrane flux of carbon dioxide (CO2 ), oxygen (O2 ), and nitrogen (N2 ) through the plasma membrane. The studies will focus in particular on CO2 and O2 flux through aquaporins, Rhesus proteins, and other candidate gas-channel proteins expressed in red blood cell (RBC) membranes. These studies are performed on RBCs isolated from various mammalian species including mice, cows and humans. The successful candidate will perform stopped-flow experiments to determine RBC O2 or CO2 permeability, Image Stream flow cytometry to determine RBC size and shape, and perform measurements of the affinity of hemoglobin for O2 . The successful candidate will also routinely make erythrocyte ghosts and work with the CWRU Mass Spectrometry cores to perform proteomic and lipidomic analyses. This position will work with animals. Finally, it is expected that the successful candidate will be familiar with the most up-to-date literature in the field, write papers, contribute to grant proposals, and assist in the design and optimization of any new experiments.
The applicant must have a PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree in Physiology, Pharmacology, Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related subject, and have a record of productivity evidenced by scholarly publications. Interested individuals should send a cover letter, CV, and contact information of three people who could provide recommendation letters of reference by email to boronlabsearch@case.edu
As a Postdoctoral Scholar, the candidate is expected to:
Train and oversee rotation students and other research staff in the lab.
PhD in biomedical sciences with hands-on experience in physiology experiments and animal work.
PhD in physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology or related discipline with 0-5 years of postdoctoral experience.
We will provide appropriate training in experimental approaches unfamiliar to the successful candidate.
NIH salary scale.
Qualified candidates should send their CV, cover letter, and three professional references to Dr. Walter Boron via the email address boronlabsearch@case.edu
