About the Department

The Classification and Compensation Department is within NC State University Human Resources and is responsible for administering, overseeing, and managing the classification systems and compensation programs as well as the administration and oversight of federal regulations and state policies for University positions subject to and exempt from the State Human Resources Act (SHRA and EHRA). The department is also responsible for developing, monitoring, and maintaining compensation programs, salary ranges, and initiatives for faculty, EHRA non-faculty, and senior academic and administrative officers.

The Division of Human Resources encompasses the functional areas of employment, classification, compensation, benefits, employee relations, training, onboarding and HR information management. These services are directed, managed, and provided by the division for more than 4,000 SHRA employees, 2,000 EHRA non-faculty employees, 1,800 faculty, and 2,500 temporary employees. In order to support the academic, research, and extension mission and goals of NC State, the division must implement a strategic university-wide approach for all human resources functions. The division provides leadership to the university administration, managers, and employees by being a progressive and innovative provider of human resources services.

Essential Job Duties

The Compensation Data Analyst will assist with compensation data analytics in the development of compensation structures by doing market studies and comparative analysis to establish hiring salary ranges and compensation structures that help to retain and reward a high performing workforce. The Compensation Data Analyst will be a key member of the University Classification and Compensation team and will conduct research using a variety of compensation and data analytic tools and resources. The Compensation Data Analyst will work closely with the Classification and Compensation Consultants in developing hiring salary ranges and setting compensation for new positions, and collaborate in the strategic design of compensation programs in support and furtherance of the University’s compensation philosophy.

Primary Duties:
  • Analyze and advise on current and future salary structures.
  • Oversee and advise on University System Office compensation reporting.
  • Conduct a yearly compensation data analysis of faculty compensation and propose new salary ranges based upon peer survey data and other sources as needed.
  • Analyze salary data and develop recommendations for salary structure changes to meet market changes.
  • Consult on the assignment of new position compensation ranges in accordance with UNC System requirements and NC State Management Flexibility Plan.
  • Conduct an annual review of EHRA compensation and provide recommendations for salary adjustments.
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and UNC System policy.
  • Oversee and advise campus on additional compensation regulations, system processes and the endorsement of transactions, and work in collaboration with HR Information Management and Analytics on technology system enhancements.
  • Oversee and advise on sign-on and retention bonus guidelines, process, compliance and reporting.
  • Oversee and advise campus on the non-salary and deferred compensation policy, process and endorsement of requests.
  • Oversee and advise on flat rate payment requests to ensure compliance with state, federal, and UNC System policy.
  • Provide analysis, research and advice for complex/novel compensation issues.
  • Perform job evaluation, compensation benchmarking, data collection to evaluate internal equity and external market competitiveness.
  • Continually evaluate processes for effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with central offices and key stakeholders on annual legislative increase and annual raise processing.
  • Ensure data integrity and data quality assurance of broad compensation data.
  • Compile and manage salary survey data to include submissions and file data management.
  • Manage projects as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Position Management and Salary Administration.


Minimum Education and Experience

Masters degree, preferably in Business Management, Human Resources, Finance or a related field of study, with with at least one year of relevant experience in compensation data analysis; or a Bachelor’s degree with at least two years’ of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency with HRIS systems and strong data mining and qualitative analysis skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, specifically as related to compensation data analytics, market data analysis, and creating and administering compensation plans.
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Excel and complex formulas.
  • Experience with the design and implementation of compensation plans.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant professional certification(s) such as SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR, CCP, etc.
