About the Department

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.

Essential Job Duties

The Extension Associate will be part of a workshop team that is responsible for managing, coordinating logistics, and implementing workshops, webinars, and conferences that are sponsored by the Department and delivered across the state of North Carolina and occasionally nationwide.

Key components of this position, alongside the other workshop team members, are to manage and provide leadership for the the day-to-day coordination and management of the Department’s Extension fee-for-service training programs. Responsibilities include but are not limited to workshop and conference planning, email announcements, programmatic webpage development and management, preparation of participant training/proceedings notebooks, managing participant registration, contract negotiations, securing continuing education credits, and other logistics. Additionally, the Extension Associate will be responsible for developing accurate budgets that will allow conferences and workshops to remain financially self-supporting. The incumbent will be expected to manage existing training programs, assist with implementation of training, and support the development of new training programs alongside other Extension and Research professionals.

The Extension Associate may also be expected to serve on conference steering committees, which may include University faculty and some or all of the following groups (i.e. government agencies, private organizations) that work together to plan, implement, and evaluate education programs. Specific program areas will include sediment and erosion control, on-site wastewater, land application, soil mapping, nutrient management, and other topics around water quality and land resource protection. Programmatic efforts will link appropriately with ongoing Extension and applied research activities in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Relevant master’s degree or bachelor’s degree with at least five (5) years of relevant experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and possess the management and organizational skills necessary to provide day-to-day management of workshop and conference logistics. Examples of these duties include but are not limited to scheduling, budget development, and reserving training venues and/or facilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineers, scientists, educators, students, government agencies, public officials, private citizens, and professional organizations in North Carolina and nationwide.
  • Knowledge of web design and accessibility.
  • Experience with spreadsheet, word processing, and database software (Excel, Word, and Reporter).
  • Some lifting is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Event planning and coordination.
  • Preference will be given to those with experience in managing contact lists and web editing software (e.g. Constant Contact, WordPress).
  • Experience in managing budgets.

  • Current LEARN Certification or the ability to be certified.
  • Valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
