The Department of Biological Sciences is dedicated to basic research and teaching in a broad range of aspects of the biological sciences. The Department has strong undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral programs and substantial extramural support to develop and maintain integrative research programs. In addition, the Department enhances its mission to interdisciplinary research and training programs with other units in the life sciences across colleges.

The Aylor lab in the Center for Human Health and the Environment (CHHE) at NC State is recruiting a talented Research Assistant. Our research area is the genetics and genomics of complex traits, with a focus on gene-by-environment interactions and susceptibility. We have specific experience applying genetically diverse population-based mouse models to the study of disease susceptibility. The NIH-supported CHHE brings together a diverse group of investigators from across the university to research all aspects of environmental health sciences using a wide range of approaches and model systems. The Aylor lab is also a part of the Department of Biological Sciences and the Bioinformatics Research Center.

Essential Job Duties

The Research Assistant will study the molecular consequences of early life toxicant exposures using mouse models. He or she will contribute to both material and intellectual aspects of studies under the supervision of the PI. These include experimental design, mouse husbandry, exposures to toxicants, mouse surgery and necropsy, sample collection, molecular techniques including next-generation sequencing library construction, data analysis, and reporting results in manuscripts and presentations. This position will also be the primary contact for lab management, including safety and animal use protocols, ordering materials, and monitoring equipment. This position is expected to work independently to execute experiments.

Other Responsibilities

Occasional night and weekend work is required. The Research Assistant will be a point of contact for collaborators within and outside the university and facilitate transfer of samples and data.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field related to biology, genetics, environmental science, or related and at least 3 years of  laboratory experience using molecular techniques using DNA, RNA, and proteins. 
  • Previous experience with the laboratory mouse.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters preferred.
  • Lab management experience is preferred.
  • Specific experience with histological preparation and analysis, reproductive biology, gene expression, next-generation sequencing, toxicology, genetics and/or epigenetics will be advantageous.
