Essential Job Duties

NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Coordinator, Wellness Programs. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student and professional staff to create world-class recreation and wellness programs and services that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom. The position directs and is responsible for the NC State Wellness Coaching and ThriveWell programs. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Wellness.

The successful candidate will provide programming for an innovative, growing, and collaborative university wellness effort. This position connects campus partners to support a wellness outreach program that includes student wellness initiatives, one-on-one and group wellness coaching, Wood Wellness Village living and learning community, lifestyle modification programs, wellness education sessions and special events. Programming efforts will address physical activity, time management, stress management, resiliency, nutrition, social support, chronic disease management, sleep, happiness, and more.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Provide leadership and direct the NC State ThriveWell program which includes student wellness initiatives, Wood Wellness Village living and learning community, lifestyle modification programs, wellness education sessions, and special events.
  • Lead one-on-one and group wellness coaching sessions for students focusing on skill building in the areas of time management, stress management, nutrition, social support, fitness, weight management, chronic disease management, self-reliance, resiliency, and goal-setting. Educate and empower clients to establish and maintain healthy behaviors.
  • Lead and instruct skills and techniques that are necessary for wellness programs. Skills include body composition testing, blood pressure testing, biometric screenings, body mass index assessment, fitness assessments, motivational interviewing, goal-setting, rapport-building, and more.
  • Manage the logistics of the ThriveWell program (reservations, equipment, staffing, etc.) Develop, implement, and update standard operating procedures and guidelines.
  • Responsible for all aspects of supervision (hiring, disciplining, terminating, performance evaluations) of more than 20 student wellness coaches and wellness assistants (equivalent to more than 2 FTE). Facilitate training, mentoring, and continuing education opportunities for staff. Responsible for managing time cards and bi-weekly payroll for respective student staff. Provide expert on-site supervision of staff.
  • Instruct nationally accredited Health Coach course for potential student wellness coaches.
  • Facilitate customizable challenges for student groups, residence halls, living and learning communities and departments.
  • Assist with the development and execution of a strategic marketing and communication plan to inform and educate the campus community about wellness programs, services, and special events.
  • Facilitate and instruct small and large group workshops, presentations, and discussions on a variety of wellness topics including physical activity, stress management, time management, resiliency, sleep, happiness, and more.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate programs related to wellness including special events and educational workshops.
  • Design, implement, execute, and evaluate lifestyle modification programs to include weight management and walking/movement challenges.
  • Independently make decisions and exceptions about standard operating procedures and guidelines — including approving refunds, as appropriate.
  • Plan and assess short and long term business objectives and goals for the ThriveWell program to determine satisfaction levels, areas of improvement and potential sectors to target among staff and participants. Participate in overall department assessment and goal planning.
  • Provide consultation and expert advice on best practices, industry trends and emerging issues to Assistant Director, Wellness and department leadership.
  • Resolve conflicts and grievances within area of responsibility. Develop and execute on-going customer service training program to ensure goals, objectives and outcomes are met.
  • Maintain a high level of visibility and develop positive working relationships with campus partners.
  • Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Post-baccalaureate credentials or a Bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, health promotion or a related field, plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

  • Commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public health, health education, health promotion or a related field within 90 days of hire.
  • Two years of experience with wellness program planning and implementation (This may include a graduate assistantship).
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES)

  • Certified Health Coach (American Council on Exercise, American College of Sports Medicine, WELCOA, etc.) or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
