Unit Description:
TRIO Programs were established to support the nation’s commitment to providing educational opportunities for all Americans to enter college, graduate, and move on to participate more fully in realizing “America’s Economic and Social Dream.” These Programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as TRIO Programs because initially, there were just three programs Upward Bound (UB), Talent Search (TS), and Student Support Services (SSS). The number has expanded to include Educational Opportunity Centers, Ronald E, McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program, Upward Bound Math & Science, and Veterans Upward Bound.
The NC State TRIO Collegiate Programs strive to encourage educational opportunities for undergraduate students by providing academic and personal support to enhance academic skills, increase retention and graduation rates, and facilitate entrance into graduate and professional programs. SSS and SSS-STEM provide opportunities for academic and personal development by assisting students with college requirements, and motivating students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program assists participants with developing skills critical to success at the graduate level through undergraduate research opportunities, graduate school preparation activities, and academic support to encourage students to pursue and complete graduate studies following the completion of their undergraduate degree. The TRIO Collegiate Programs cultivates student success through engagement, empowerment, and support for 286 participants.
