POSITION DETAILS

Reporting to the Associate Director of Retention and Completion, the Senior Academic Advisor for Transfer and Completion will assess student needs, goals, interests, and prior academic experiences in order to guide students in the design and implementation of a successful academic plan. The Senior Academic Advisor for Transfer and Completion will specialize in providing advisement for the Transfer student population and manage and support Transfer student retention and degree completion.

 

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the duties of the Senior Academic Advisor for Transfer and Completion will include but are not limited to the following:

·       Provide comprehensive advisements for all undergraduate students regarding their academic plan, course selection, and academic standards.

·       Participate in new student advisement initiatives, including advisement of Transfer and first-year students.

·       Advise and support students who are approaching graduation but are encountering obstacles.

·       Provide prospective students from our feeder institutions transfer support.

·       Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus support services including Admissions and the Transfer Evaluation Office to address the academic needs of students and to ensure a smooth transfer experience.

·       Develop and implement strategic initiatives to minimize “transfer shock".

·       Conduct Progress Report campaigns and coordinate enrollment campaigns to ensure timely registration.

·       Design and implement targeted communication to support the advisement of Transfer students and/or other student populations.

·       Utilize advising technologies such as DegreeWorks, CUNYfirst, Schedule Builder, e-notes, Navigate, Transfer Explorer, and other emerging software to prepare enrollment, retention, and assessment reports and to provide academic advisement and to monitor students’ academic progress toward degree completion.

·       Perform routine scribing updates for DegreeWorks.

·       Develop and conduct seminars and/or workshops in order to improve student engagement, satisfaction, major exploration, career exploration, and academic preparedness.

·       Answer questions by email, phone, or video chat, from students, faculty, or administrators regarding degree requirements, academic regulations, and various other academic support services.

·       Participate in staff development programs, such as conferences, workshops, and staff meetings.

·       Align all efforts with the College’s Strategic Plan and its mission.

·       Occasionally work evening and/or weekend hours.

Vaccine Mandate

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

·       Bachelor's Degree and four years' related experience required.

 

Preferred

·       Master's degree and three years' academic advisement experience in higher education.

·       Knowledge and proven implementation of national best practices in academic advisement, academic momentum, student success, and retention.

·       Advanced knowledge and experience utilizing advising systems, including e-advising systems such as DegreeWorks.

·       Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc).

·       Advanced proficiency in virtual platforms such as Teams and Zoom.

·       Experience working with a diverse student population.

·       Strong interpersonal/human relations skills.

·       Excellent written and public speaking skills.

·       Ability to maintain confidentiality.

·       Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evening and weekend hours.

 

 

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides expert and/or specialized academic counseling a diverse student population.

·       Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students.

·       Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses.

·       Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements.

·       Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits.

·       Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines.

·       Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling.

·       Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses.

·       May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed.

·       May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling.

·       May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff.

·       Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$52,267 - $56,447; Salary commensurate with education and experience.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022, City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
