GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

This is a part-time (27.5 hours/week) position located on the Estherville Campus, also serving the Spirit Lake Campus. Primary responsibilities are to assist adult learners in defining their career path and transition them to either continue their education or enter the workforce. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and demonstrate ability to recruit, advise, and retain participants through short-term, skill-up programming. Position is contingent on continued grant funding.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (% OF THE TIME):

Constant (67-100%)

  • Recruit and provide career/transition services to aid students in selecting career pathway and determining appropriate training to secure or advance employment opportunities.
  • Assess students' skills, interests, and previous academic and work experience for purposes of placement in pathways for academic career and employment projects.
  • Provide career exploration options to un- and under- employed individuals, or people in transition, such as participants served in the Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) programs.
  • Assist all participants to draft a career and education plan.
  • Co-teach or facilitate success/career preparation classes to the program participants primarily for individuals who are contemplating a career change, career enhancement or student waiting to enroll in a non-credit, scholarship eligible, or AEL program.
  • Articulate the career mapping process for pathways and encourage students to explore bridge between non-credit and credit programs.

Frequent (34-66%)

  • Maintain appropriate records to document progress for reports.
  • Assist clients to access tools to help them manage program expectations to completion.
  • Assist participants to secure a 4-to-8-week internship (1) after completing non-credit scholarship program or (2) AEL program student once they achieve Level 4 proficiency (English Language Learners), or (3) High School Diploma students who have completed three of the five required units.

Occasional (10-33%)

  • Support participants as their career and/or education plan changes.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with students enrolled in career-focused, career pathways as they leave and secure employment.
  • Participate in activities with community-based organizations that serve as key recruiters for pathways for academic career and employment projects and assist students throughout the enrollment/completion process.
  • Collaborate to host college student Job Fair(s).
  • Connect students with resources or outside support services as needed.
  • Serve on selected and voluntary committees of the college.
  • Arrange and/or attend meetings when necessary.
  • Conduct community awareness programs to advertise services.
  • Perform other work duties as assigned and requested.

  • Ability to access, utilize, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Represent the college in a positive manner to employees, students, visitors, and the general public.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, colleagues, staff, administrators, and other contacts.
  • Must be enthusiastic, energetic, self-motivated, and creative with demonstrated leadership and organization skills.
  • Must develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of office procedures, telephone techniques, and appropriate equipment, and utilize correct English, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Ability to read and understand written and oral instructions or communications.
  • Ability to efficiently perform tasks in an environment of frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems and exercise good judgment when making decisions.
  • Possess strong human relations skills and the ability to effectively relate to diverse personalities.
  • Ability to make public presentations that are effective and well received.

SPECIAL DEMANDS:


Sedentary to light work. Position involves sitting most of the time; exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally (10-33%). Stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, occasionally (10-33%). Walking, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motion frequently (34-66%). Talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work constantly (67-100%). Must have valid driver’s license, good driving record and provide proof of insurance. Required to travel utilizing personal vehicle.

Employment with Iowa Lakes Community College is dependent upon successful passage of a criminal background check. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Associate Degree in a related area required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Prior experience in education program development or instruction is desired. Multi-language skills preferred.

 

Salary: $20.67/hour
