Essential Job Duties

This position will serve a crucial role in the Athletic Department on the Human Resources team. Position will deliver superior consultation to all supervisors and employees within the Athletic Department while ensuring compliance with regulations and policies related to the University, State, NCAA, ACC and relevant Federal business practices. Due to the high volume, dollar amount and complexity of personnel actions in the Athletic Department this position will independently handle many functions with little oversight from the Assistant Athletic Director for Human Resources to ensure prompt service is provided for all human resources matters. Primary duties include but not limited to:

  • Serve as a backup to the Assistant Athletic Director for Human Resources.
  • Act as an advisor and functional expert to the Director of Athletics, Executive Staff, department administrators, coaches, supervisors and employees on initial personnel appointments and changes, salary increases, non-salary compensation, benefits, payroll, and employee relations; providing expertise and consultation to senior leadership, coaches and staff.
  • Responsible for providing HR expertise and support to management teams and supervisors as it relates to permanent staff, temporary personnel, visitors, and no-pay appointments.
  • Ability to run, develop and maintain reports as needed, including detailed extensive reporting for NCAA and ACC.
  • Assist with responding to Freedom of Information Requests.
  • Ability to research and compile salary market data for compensation requests.
  • The Assistant HR Manager will work closely with members of the University Human Resources team and serve as a liaison to ensure policies and procedures are being followed.
  • Oversee and manage employee engagement activities by providing methods for promoting and strengthening the organization’s culture and core values.
  • Manage onboarding of new employees and look for continued efficiencies and improvements.
  • Must be able to handle details of a highly confidential and critical nature. A high level of professionalism, confidentiality, follow-through, and attention to detail is required.
  • Candidates for the position must have a proven ability to independently manage multiple tasks and HR functions with competing deadlines and priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of two years of human resources experience involving development, implementation, application, and interpretation of human resources policies relating to position management, employee relations, and recruitment.
  • Must have the skills to make independent decisions, be objective, and handle difficult employee issues and be able to initiate Crucial Conversations.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be a team player that is adaptable to the needs of the organization.
  • Must have excellent active listening, conflict management and negotiation skills.
  • Exercise tact, diplomacy and good judgment in a highly confidential and sensitive environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with the People Soft Human Resources System strongly preferred
  • Prior experience with University of North Carolina System policies and procedures preferred.
  • Prior experience in Athletics Human Resources preferred.
