As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a diverse portfolio of programs in teaching, research and extension components. Essential Job Duties

The Research Technician will be responsible for organzing and conducting DNA extractions, PCR and qPCR assays in the laboratory. This position will also be required to assist in the planning, execution, maintenance, and data collection of all field and greenhouse research experiments on plants and plant pathogens.

Duties will include but not limited to:
  • Conducts DNA extractions, and PCR and qPCR reactions repetively and troubleshoots issues with assays. Perform basic laboratory techniques such as transferring cultures under aseptic conditions, perform plant disease isolations, follow safety and sanitary protocols, and other research related tasks.
  • Must be able to communicate well both verbally and verbally to other staff, the supervisor, cooperators, and in preparing publications and data recording. Maintains research experiments, follows standard operating procedures, follows and ensures safe operation of equipment. Observe, monitor, collect and record data with accuracy, validity and integrity under adverse conditions in the greenhouse and field.

Please note that this position is located at the Mountain Research Station in Waynesville, NC.

At present, this position is listed as time-limited for two (2) years, with a maximum time-limited status of three (3) years. However, the position has the potential to become permanent if future funding is secured for its continuation.

Minimum Experience/Education

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must have experience with DNA extraction, PCR and qPCR assays, and other basic and routine laboratory techniques.
    Must have experience working while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Basic laboratory techniques.
  • Ability to use lab equipment such as autoclaves and pipettes with proper training.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in field and greenhouse environments under adverse conditions.
  • Profiecient in use of Microsoft Office systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and safe work habits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working under field conditions with plants
  • Experience working in a laboratory

Required License or Certification

  • A valid driver’s license is required for travel. An NC driver’s license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained for the duration of the candidate’s employment.
