Princeton University's Neuroscience Institute seeks applicants for a Research Specialist position to join a laboratory whose work focuses on social communication and the neural mechanisms underlying sensory processing and sensory-driven behaviors in the fruit fly, Drosophila. We are looking for an enthusiastic and hard-working individual who has a willingness to learn and acquire new skills (and a demonstrated track record in learning new techniques).

 

This is a one-year term position with the possibility of renewal contingent upon performance and funding.



Assist postdoctoral fellows in the lab on projects related to the neural basis of sensorimotor behaviors in Drosophila - this could involve behavioral experiments combined with neural activation and silencing, anatomy experiments to trace neural circuits, and genetic experiments to identify neurons and the molecules they express that underlie sensory processing and the control of behavior.

 

Perform general lab maintenance duties, including Drosophila genetic experiments, molecular experiments, and establishing and maintaining fly stocks. Lead and maintain lab safety standards, manage lab organization, cleanups, facilitate ordering. Learn new molecular and neuroscience techniques as required. Participate in some data analysis tasks.



Essential Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree plus two years minimum prior research or technical assistant experience at a university or medical school or equivalent.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work well with others.
  • Outstanding references.
  • Basic computer skills (Word processing, Excel).
  • Experience working with Drosophila, particularly managing stocks and multi-stage crosses.
  • Able to perform basic molecular biology techniques (such as PCR and immunohistochemistry)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in conducting animal behavior experiments.
  • Comfortability with computer programming or data analysis.
