Position Summary

Victoria College's Department of Police & Campus Safety  is recruiting for a full-time Campus Police Officer-Sergeant.  This position is responsible for campus security, crime prevention and investigation, emergency preparedness and response, law enforcement, asset protection, and building access control.  This position requires passing a post-offer physical and drug screen.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Conducting criminal investigations of violations, testifying and making case presentments to the District Attorney and courts;
  2. Provides first line supervision to VC police officers and security officers.
  3. In the absence of the Police Chief, will assume the duties and responsibilities associated to the position of Chief during his absence.
  4. Assists the Chief of Police in the leadership, management and operation of the department; assists in the development, administration, coordination and implementation of departmental policies, procedures and activities.  Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).
  5. Directs the preparation of a variety of records and reports relating to departmental activities; prepares reviews and presents reports and other necessary correspondence; reviews and evaluates reports and other documents submitted by subordinate personnel.
  6. Evaluates and modifies, as required, programs, activities, policies, procedures, rules, orders and regulations to ensure compliance with the college’s and department’s mission, goals, objectives, core values, Strategic Plan, Departmental policies, and general law. 
  7. Providing highly visible personal and real property security, first-line response, emergency management, routine security and public safety patrol, providing escort service and other basic public assistance, remaining alert to emergency situations and helping prevent injury and crime, parking enforcement, and informing and warning violators of rule infractions;
  8. Working shifts, nights, weekends, and some holidays as assigned; may be required to work extended hours in cases of emergency, disaster or other situations influenced by workload, or staffing difficulties.  Will be required to work special events and college sponsored functions.  
  9. Attend professional development training as assigned.
  10. Participate in committees as requested by the college and/or conduct presentations and safety training to college employees.
  11. Perform audits and surveys as required by governing agencies;
  12. Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Qualifications

  • Must be a TCOLE certified Peace Officer with at least an Intermediate Peace Officer Certification. 
  • TCOLE Advanced Certification, and experience in criminal investigations is strongly preferred.  
  • High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of 30 college semester hours required.
  • Must be a US Citizen, 21 years of age or over, and in good physical condition.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record consistent with the policies and insurance requirements of Victoria College.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, and the ability to communicate complex information in oral and written format to a variety of audiences. 
  • Must demonstrate a creative, courteous, and customer service oriented approach to campus policing; 
  • Must be able to represent the college professionally and work collaboratively with administration, faculty, and staff, as well as outside agencies; 
  • A documented stable work history and a proven record of excellence in law enforcement;
  • Thorough knowledge of and willingness to enforce laws of the State of Texas, The Texas Education Code, and all rules and regulations of Victoria College as designated. 
  • Knowledge of Excel, Word and Adobe Acrobat. 


Disqualifications

  1. Having a conviction for, being under indictment for, or currently charged with any felony offense
  2. Having a conviction for or currently charged with any misdemeanor offense involving moral turpitude.
  3. Having been convicted for an offense of a Class A misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten (10) years. 
  4. Conviction for Family Violence
  5. Conviction for DWI in the last (10) years
  6. Applicants cannot be on probation for any offense.

Physical Demands

  • Patrol the property on foot and by vehicle for extended periods of time. 
  • Respond to emergency calls, prevent crime, suppress disturbances, effect arrest of offenders, and issue citations.
  • May be required to perform a variety of physically demanding movements while involved in law enforcement operations, including but not limited to: running, walking, climbing, jumping, bending, stooping, rolling, crawling, lifting, carrying, dragging, and safely operating assigned equipment and police vehicles in a variety of emergency situations.
  • Must be able to lift 30-45 lbs. frequently, up to 75 lbs. occasionally, pull or drag up to 150 lbs. 
  • The applicant may be exposed to hazardous and stressful working conditions including physically violent persons, intoxicated subjects, armed suspects, and persons who may resist arrest, and or evade detention or apprehension. 
  • The applicant will be expected to perform duties in seasonal temperatures, and all types of weather conditions.
  • The applicant may be exposed to dangerous chemicals, drugs, and other harmful substances.
