Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Temporary Clinical Research Assistant at Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science for Rutgers Biomedical & Health Sciences.
The Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science (RITMS) was founded in January 2016 and is directed by the Vice-Chancellor for clinical and translational science, Dr. Reynold Panettieri. RITMS conducts basic research in immunology, physiology and molecular biology. RITMS provides unique opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral research and clinical education, and cooperative education training. The program is interdisciplinary by nature.
The position will cover both the basic scientific research and clinical research worlds of the RITMS. In regards to the clinical research section, the applicant will have the opportunity to observe and assist in all aspects of the clinical research experience. This includes assisting with the research subject visits for various ongoing studies, the creation of protocol for future studies, the adaptation of sponsor-initiated protocols for participation here, and submitting protocols for review by the Institutional Review Board. The basic research expectations include the performance of experiments related with evaluating cellular responses generated by glucocorticoids and cAMP-elevating agents in lung cells. Responsibilities will include culturing different lung cell types (both primary cells and cell lines) and performing immunological assays (immunofluorescent staining, ELISA, & western blots). Additional responsibilities will keeping accurate records and notes; ordering lab supplies; working knowledge of MS Office to keep inventories of experimental reagents; data analysis and general lab duties.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Scheduling and assisting with patient visits.
  • Processing clinical samples.
  • Submitting protocols for review by the Institutional Review Board.
  • Culturing different lung cell types (both primary cells and cell lines).
  • Performing human and murine Precision Cut Lung Slice (PCLS) experiments.
  • Performing immunological assays (immunofluorescent staining, ELISA, western blots, immunoprecipitations, and flow cytometry/FACS).
  • Performing molecular biology techniques (PCR & real time-PCR techniques, DNA and mRNA sample preparation, plasmid DNA preparation, DNA subcloning, and siRNA/shRNA transfections).
  • Data analysis and assistance in publication preparation.
  • Additional duties include assisting in experimental design and participating in general laboratory activities.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate program for one of the following fields: health sciences, nursing, biology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or other related science field.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A strong background in cell and molecular biology and tissue culture.
  • Familiarity with basic concepts of cell, cell-cell signaling, and molecular biology.
  • Experience performing basic scientific assays including tissue culture, protein isolation, western blot analysis, RNA/DNA isolation and purification, PCR, and ELISAs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Standing, sitting, walking, talking, and hearing. No special vision requirements. Ability to lift or exert force up to 25 pounds
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
General laboratory setting. Requires extensive safety training. Will be exposed to chemicals.
