Structural Vaccinology

Job Description

A research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Viral Products (DVP), Office of Vaccines Research and Review (OVRR). at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The laboratory of Dr. Jason Gorman has an opening for a postdoctoral research position focused on structural vaccinology. This position is ideal for a motivated individual who has a strong background in mammalian expression, biochemistry, and/or cryo-EM. The successful candidate will join a new lab that uses cryo-electron microscopy to understand how viral proteins are recognized by antibodies at an atomic level, and how that recognition can be exploited to design the most effective vaccines. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for designing and executing experiments to determine the structure and function of clinically relevant viral proteins and their associated antibodies and receptors. This is an exciting opportunity for postdocs who want to learn structural biology and apply new ideas to antigen design.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining mammalian cell cultures for protein expression through transient transfection
  • Protein purification (affinity and size exclusion chromatography)
  • Protein binding experiments (ELISA or SPR)
  • Develop and optimize protocols for sample preparation and imaging by cryo-EM
  • Collecting and analyzing cryo-EM data using a Tundra microscope
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting experiments
  • Analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data
  • Writing and publishing manuscripts
  • Participate in the development of new projects using structural biology to enable vaccine development

Qualifications:
  • PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, or related field
  • Experience with protein expression using mammalian cells
  • Strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of immunology, virology
  • Comfortable with linux and shell scripting
  • Experience with structural biology software (Pymol, Phenix, Chimera, etc)
  • Experience with cryo-EM software (cyroSPARC, Relion, etc)
  • Experience with protein purification
