Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in hand by August 1, 2023. Experience conducting research in atmospheric science or closely related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in climate or atmospheric science, or closely related science in hand by August 1, 2023. Experience in hurricane or extreme precipitation research. Experience with running and analyzing simulations the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), the Community Earth System Model (CESM) or the Weather Research & Forecasting Model (WRF). Experience in extreme weather and climate events research. Experience with running and analyzing atmospheric numerical models.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Climate Extremes Modeling Group in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University seeks a highly-motivated Postdoctoral Associate to conduct research for the Department of Energy’s HyperFACETS Project , under the auspices of Principal Investigator, Dr. Kevin Reed . The research focuses on advancing our understanding of processes at the atmosphere-water-energy-land interface and evaluating our ability to perform credible climate modeling of hurricanes and extreme precipitation events.  The project aims to motivate co-production between stakeholders and scientists to improve our understanding of the potential impact of climate change on extreme events and how to better communicate regional climate information. Successful candidates will demonstrate attention to detail and have strong verbal and written communication skills.

Postdoctoral Associate duties will include:

  • Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, perform ensembles simulations with the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) of recent hurricanes and other extreme precipitation events under various climate scenarios.
  • Analyze E3SM output and observations to quantify the impact of climate change on these extreme events.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present results at conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Translate impact of research to other disciplines.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.

Senior Postdoctoral Associate
