Essential Job Duties

The Exotic Animal Medicine Clinical Technician responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical support for the designated services.
  • Assist Veterinarians with Physical exams, animal restraint, scheduling, treatments, sedation, anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, and diagnostics including but not limited to radiographs, sample collections, transportation of patients to areas within the NCSU Veterinary hospitals, and maintaining medical records.
  • Efficiently triage patients presenting for emergent conditions for signs of respiratory failure and shock and obtain a history from owners.
  • Administer treatments, fluids, and medications via various parenteral administration sites (PO, IM, SC, Ice, IV, IO) and accurately be able to calculate drug doses, solutions, and IV fluid rates. Monitor patients, perform lab tests, and maintain medical records.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment, including repair schedules. Ensure compliance with all Infectious Disease protocols.
  • Perform administrative roll for services; inventory control, correct billing, scheduling, supply ordering / purchasing, monitoring treatment sheets for accuracy, and ensuring good communication and collaboration with all ancillary services and other areas of the hospital.
  • Provide accurate responses to email and phone inquiries in an efficient, timely manner.
  • Efficient at metric conversions, calculation of drug doses, and running laboratory testing PCV, TP, UA, and fecal analysis (direct smears, floats, gram stains, acid-fast stains).
  • Administer sedation and anesthesia and maintain safety by evaluating the patient status and anesthetic depth using established parameters such as outward involuntary physical response (i.e. jaw tone, palpebral reflex, eye position), blood pressure, ECG, pulse oximetry, heart rate, respiratory rate, and ventilation status.
  • Assist with orientation and teaching students of all aforementioned duties.
  • Record and organize data (Nutrition).

Minimum Experience/Education

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience as an assistant in a multi-species / exotic animal veterinary setting.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
  • Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
  • Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students.
  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or ability to obtain NC registration within 6 months of date of hire. NC RVT exam eligibility requirements include graduation from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program and a passing score on the National Veterinary Technician Exam

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of NC.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting, preferably at a teaching hospital.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a veterinary technician in an exotic animal species practice, including administration and monitoring of anesthesia.

Required License or Certification

NC Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or ability to obtain NC Registration within 6 months of date of hire.
