SUMMARY

Provide career advising, career development and/or employment services to students, alumni, and other persons—including the development and delivery of career and placement decision making programs.  Work with students, alumni, employers and other persons to identify and explore career ideas, plans, and goals.  Present career/employment programs and ideas to college and community groups.

 

The primary responsibility of the Career Services Specialist is to establish trusting, collaborative relationships with COEs, students, staff, and faculty which are supportive of goal of advancing students ability to transition to competitive employment. This position will be instrumental in creating and delivering comprehensive student career development, career readiness, and student employment placement services in support of students’ educational, occupational, personal, and professional growth.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Interview all applicants to discuss career planning and/or employment opportunities, requirements, interests and procedures;

  2. Provide career and employment advising to students and alumnae;

  3. Research and develop collaborations with employers and industries related to Centers of Excellence (COE);

  4. Assist students with building a Career Development Portfolio;

  5. Guide and monitor students’ creation of their Career Development Plan;

  6. Collaborate with Counselors and Academic Advisors to assure career plan aligns with academic plan;

  7. Provide career advising and enrichment to students and alumnae to assure accurate students interpretation, application, and use of various career assessment tools in making a career decision;

  8. Identify the appropriate career assessment tool to accommodate student needs;

  9. Make appropriate referrals for students requiring Level 4 and Level 5 career assessments as well as students with unusual problems, disabilities or other restrictions;

  10. Orient a variety of users regarding purposes and goals of the college placement services;

  11. Prepare announcements regarding examinations, career opportunities and/or briefs; prepares advertising copy and correspondence for recruitment purposes;

  12. Conduct career planning and job readiness/placement classes, workshops and seminars; may participate in planning and development of classes, workshops or seminars;

  13. Prepare reports for local, state and federal offices dealing with statistical computation regarding oversupply and shortage of various employment categories;

  14. Coordinate experiential learning opportunities that may include Co-Op, internships, job shadowing, and externships;

  15. Assist with managing the college online career and employment center;

  16. Provide individualized support to assist students in securing and maintaining employment, including job coaching during the first month of a new job; or as requested by student;

  17. Track and maintain files, reports on employment, and departmental success through online career portal;

  18. Participate in the coordination of career and employment events; activities, and community affairs;

  19. Participate in annual professional development training as required; and

  20. Work with HCC Communication and C2C Team to create and disseminate notices of job fairs, job openings, and opportunities to participate in internships, co-operative training, job shadowing, and other experiential learning strategies.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.  The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in social science, psychology, social work/sociology, education, human resources, communication, public relations, marketing, business or related field required. Masters preferred.  

 

EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of work experience in workforce development, career services, human resources, college relations, marketing, job placement services, higher education or related field required.

 

An additional one (1) year of case management experience or a Certification in Career Development is a plus.  

 

Workforce industry, writing/editing resumes, developing job leads, case management, conducting training experience is preferred.

 

Master’s degree and one (1) year experience can be substituted for experience.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of career planning practices and techniques;

  2. Knowledge of computer applications, search engines, and navigating the world wide web;

  3. Knowledge of job seeking techniques;

  4. Knowledge of job market trends ;

  5. Knowledge in higher education student services;

  6. Knowledge of interviewing techniques and related career and job search skills;

  7. Knowledge of human behavior, individual differences, motivation and attitudes;

  8. Knowledge of employment readiness and placement processes;

  9. Knowledge of various types, characteristics, and uses of resumes;

  10. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;

  11. Proficiency with incorporating the use of technology to deliver career services with emphasis on employment search and on-line application processes;

  12. Able to work with diverse customer base;

  13. Able to develop, deliver, and market workshops and job resources; and

  14. Able to research and quickly develop knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends, occupational, career and employment information sources.
