Basic Function/Definition

Basic Function:
RTO’s who possess qualifications, knowledge, experience and training will supervise recruits attending any RHC Police Academy. Work site is at the Rio Hondo College Police Academy in Whittier, CA.

Knowledge of:
1. Exemplify and emphasize the values, ethics, and high standards required of Public Safety professionals.
2. Supporting the District’s official vision, values and goals.
3. Understanding of the mission of a basic training delivery system.

Ability to:
Under the direction of the Police Academy Director/Coordinator:
1. Day to day supervision of recruits and all of their activities.
2. Provides feedback and guidance to students.
3. Evaluates and documents student performance and conduct.
4. Responds to requests for feedback or information to client agencies regarding students.
5. Attends the Recruit Training Officer Workshop within one year of appointment for Police Academy RTOs.
6. Maintains a clean, safe, and professional training environment.
7. Model the appearance, behavior, and demeanor of an exemplary public safety officer.
8. Adheres to the District’s Code of Conduct.

Essential Duties

  • Monitors that instruction (paramilitary instruction only – marching, formations, etc.) meets state legislative mandates and procedures, POST Commission regulations and/or Fire Marshall regulations; E
  • Monitors instruction to meet federal legislative mandates and procedures; E
  • Provides day-to-day first line supervision of trainees and recruits; E
  • Supports, motivates, evaluates, and advises trainees and recruits; E
  • Performs operational risk management and enforces student safety policy; and E
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, federal laws, and the District’s board policies and administrative procedures associated with the educational and workplace environment. E
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb and lift 100 lbs. E
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Education and Experience

Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from high school or GED AND
  • Possession of a Basic POST Certificate AND
  • A minimum of five years of full time service as a Police Officer AND
  • Ability to pass a fit-for-duty requirement, lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

POST Certificate.
